AFI - A Winter's Tale Lyrics

A chilling silence.
A world of violets.
My breath materialized again.
Immaculate.
Inanimate.
A comfort cutting time I see... a string of white lights.
Forever walking through December.
Forever longing for a sign of life, a bringer of light.
Forever wandering together through a world of violets.
Ice everlasting.
A full moon casting a purple veil enshrouding all.
I perambulate, somnambulant.
A solace piercing time I see... a string of white lights.
If only one for night, if only for one night, if only for one night remember.
If only for one night, if only for one night, if only for one night together.

AFI A Winter's Tale Comments
  1. R.... M....

Damn I miss this AFI! Still the best band ever!

  2. T.... S....

    Love it

  3. i.... ....

This was a u.k. Release only but napster happened so that didn't matter to me in NC

  4. N.... A....

666 Likes, the first time I've been cool!

  5. j.... r....

Damn. Forgot how good AFI used to be.

  6. 5.... ....

anyhow, they the best so far

  7. V.... !....

when i was a kid i always though Davey said "Ghetto" instead of Go haha

    V.... !....

    Just pictured that
    🤣👍

  8. A.... A....

    Morning Star.

  9. G.... S....

similar lyrics to what he used for his guest spot on transplants 1st album (quick death) did he having a writing credit on it?

  10. L.... A....

This will always be my absolute favorite AFI song <3

    L.... A....

Lori Ann McCarthy is there a particular reason why? (Just asking)

    L.... A....

Beautiful lyrics, Davey still has that hardcore voice, before he sold out. But Fall children for me! Forever walking through December, my b day!

    L.... A....

Same, took me forever to remember the name of this song.

  11. C.... O....

It's hard listening to this song and trying not to think about all the drugs back then...my kids will never understand lol

    C.... O....

    Ostrowski polskie nazwisko? Polish surname.

  12. s.... ....

probably my favorite afi song at the moment

  13. S.... ....

Fun fact: Davey and the gang got trapped in Decemberunderground a few years back....took the shovel of Bright Black Heaven to get 'em back out...Crash Love really broke their hearts, so, you know... Darkness is as darkness comes.

  14. K.... Z....

Jade adds all of those overdubbing harmonizing with his guitar. He makes these songs so beautiful. He hasn't been doing it as much lately :( THAT is why A.F.I. is great. Every member in the band is just as talented, but without Jade, things would have been different.

    K.... Z....

+Kaylyn Zoe he is great at it, but he still does it all the time. it's just not the same style of music anymore, but he's still playing it all his way. if that makes sense.

    K.... Z....

@Bastard Mike I know what you mean.  But he really peaked with Sing The Sorrow.  The guitar playing was so rich on that album  He was amazing on that album.  I know he's been amazing on each album he's been on.  I still have to warm up to Burials though.  All those guys are talented.  Hunter's bass playing and Adam knows just where to put all the beats.  AFI is one of the best bands in the last 30 years.

    K.... Z....

That kid probably has no idea who the fuck you're talking about

  15. F.... B....

Damn, can't believe this is from 15 years ago, already.
Time runs so fast. But this remains an amazing song.

    F.... B....

Me either man! Time flies huh? I remember when the days of the pheonix ep came out like it was yesterday

  16. M.... J....

i prefer afi back when they sucked 1991-1997

    M.... J....

Yup. Feels horrible to see the same people that made fun of us in middle school and high school “love” this band haha

    M.... J....

@Deadfordays the old afi was what I grew up with in high school. 95-2003 then I lost interest. I was a junior in high school when their first album came out listen to them ever since STS then I lost interest because they are emo teenage mainstream, they rather go for money than be what they use to be, that was bad ass! Sad!!!

    M.... J....

@marty uribe I'm sure they liked money when they were punk. Don't forget that in the 90s, you could still make somewhat of a living even being on an independent label punk rock band. There was no free downloads or YouTube yet. I think they legit enjoy playing that shitty emo music. Ah well

    M.... J....

@Stavros Alexandris lol at least your like me and think it is shitty lol! Cuz I mean damn what a change, just sucks ass!

    M.... J....

@marty uribe 95-03? you were in high school a whiiiiiiiiiile

  17. A.... P....

I've not listened to this in years, big thanks :):):) 3 and a half minutes my world stopped

  18. r.... b....

    thank u thank u thank u...I haven't heard this song in so long...thank u

  19. N.... O....

    "Forever walking through December.
Forever longing for a sign of life, a bringer of light.
Forever wandering together through a world of violets. "

  20. z.... ....

These were the good days of AFI.

    z.... ....

    well said

  21. T.... ....

Should every AFI album sound the same? No, growth is good and needed...but the direction they took IMO is just not for me. Wish they would have gone in a more progressive direction instead of the pop direction they took. Thrice changed but always stayed amazing.

    T.... ....

Davey Havok himself said they're not the same band...when you have a divide like that, you're going to have a division in the fans. Don't be mad cause the punks put one up on you bro. Also, the fact that you compared AFI (at any stage) to Thrice is evidence enough that you have no authority to be making a judgement call when it comes to good music. ANSWER THAT AND STAY FASHIONABLE!

    T.... ....

Omega preach it dawg, I am one of the old fans started listening in 96 to sts and fell off because they suck balls, mainstream hollywood crap. Fame and money fucking suck! Killed my favorite band. I would never have thought that they would have changed to this new crap.

Topher, I hear the same bs from the new fans they evolved, fuck no they didn't they sold out for a new fan base for money and fame. No disrespect because part of your comment was okay, but they are far from amazing anymore. It is like shitting on the punks and going pop. You can not blame the old fans for being upset and bailing. But it is what it is!

  22. A.... A....

    shutup betch

  23. H.... O....

Lol whatever dude.. considering you know absolutely nothing about me apart from what you misinterpreted from my comment, I wonder how you can so boldly make these assumptions about me?
Let it go, your coming off as a keyboard warrior who can't accept the opinions of others.

  24. j.... ....

your mom is for women and gays

  25. j.... ....

Davey needs to come back down to earth though. He seems to be channeling a game show host on Crash Love. Why do they feel the need to where matching outfits and spin around on stage. It all feels very insincere to me. I think that's what fans are really mad about, They need to get back to be real and lose the dramatics.

    j.... ....

Where the fuck were you this whole time dude? AFI has always been dramatic, even in their East Bay days. You fuckin people need to pick up some vinyl and stop reading shit on wikipedia.

  26. j.... ....

The fact that you have to use words like horror punk(ridiculous) and hardcore just shows how much of a follower you are. Why do people like you feel the need to define everything in these impossible little boxes with no where to go. Art is art. Period. If you aren't challenging yourself as an artist then you cease to be one. Not every song can be a masterpiece. People like you just perpetuate fears of individuality and further segregate and split our community. Stop trying to cool and just be.

  27. M.... T....

    Absolute Crap.

  28. H.... O....

I would buy them if they sounded like this haha. Why do I still buy Motorhead albums? Because it still sounds like Ace of Spades for the most part. Sometimes people don't like when a band changes style because they enjoyed their first style more. Just the reality of the situation is all.

  29. H.... O....

Idk about that haha, To me AFI broke up when they released Sing The Sorrow; just opinion though. I know people still like them and that is cool and all, but after that I could care less what they do. I won't hate on them, there is plenty of other good horror punk and hardcore to listen to. But nonetheless your statement doesn't apply to everyone.

  30. A.... C....

Just watch, when the time comes that this band breaks up, everyone, including the old and new AFI fans are going to cry and wish they were still together. You don't know what you have till its gone, cheesy but true.

    A.... C....

Anthems For Insubordinates died after the East Bay Days, man... A Fire Inside started with Black Sails and ended with Sing the Sorrow (for me it was right after All Hallows and The Art of Drowning, though), a couple of songs on Decemberunderground should have been called "Davey Havok's Dying Breath" or some emo shit like that and now there's whatever the fuck they are now. Too bad most of the kids reading these comments have no idea what the fuck I'm talking about.

  31. U.... ....

    Seriously.
As an AFI fan would you really want to keep buying albums if they all sounded the same? Exactly. No.
People need to just enjoy the growth of this band.
I enjoy the older stuff, and the new stuff, for different reasons.
But your wasting your breath. they are gonna complainnnn.

  32. x.... ....

I always wonder if people actually listen to Crash Love properly, and listen to the complexity of the music? Jade, Hunter and Adam have really truly evolved as musicians, even Davey has evolved lyrically and vocally - and I love it. I have loved AFI for years, and love all of their albums (AoD and StS by far being my favourites!) People need to realise that a band will evolve, AFI want to keep things fresh, they don't want to be releasing the same sound for 20 years. I applaud them for that!

    x.... ....

I absolutely agree. For many years the only AFI albums I listened to were Very Proud Of Ya and the All Hallows EP. I am very thankful that I cam to appreciate them in all their varied talents to the point that Sing The Sorrow and the criminally underrated Crash Love are my favourite. I am not very fond of Decemberunderground and The Blood Album and I dislike Burials, but part of growing up is accepting the will to diversify others' tastes and not necessarily moan about it at every chance. I am glad AFI are doing whatever the fuck they please and I hope to fall in line with them as often as I can!

  33. C.... ....

Can't seem to escape this new vs old AFI debate... ALL of their albums are works of high art and a REAL AFI fans know it. If you can't appreciate them for what they are then do us all a favor and just shut the hell up because no one with more than half of a brain wants to hear it. Go make your ignorant, stupid, and homophobic comments somewhere else.

    C.... ....

I disagree. I have always liked them (sometimes more than others) but that doesn't make me a better, bigger, "more real" or "more true" fan. Neither does labelling all their work as "High Art". You don't get to label other people's tastes, sorry.

  34. B.... W....

First time I heard that just then...... And it goes into the ''mad fucking anthems'' playlist.

  35. S.... ....

I woke up drunk thinking about this song.

  36. A.... J....

Ha. Damn. My first AFI song was "Dream of Waking". Therefore... I'm more of a fan than you.

    jk.

  37. D.... ....

dude... no one wants to hear you shout your opinion in a profound way. In other words no one gives a shit and you just made yourself look like a dumbass... good fucking job :D

  38. D.... ....

damn i remember being like 5 listening to this song over and over and over and over.

  39. b.... s....

That should tell you all you need to know about what AFI meant to a legion of people around 1998-2003..Then AFI turned around and became a completely different band and left hundreds of thousands adoring fans alienated. Many of those fans in their disllusionment, have tried to figure out what happened and in almost disbelief, stand at aghast at what AFI became and want to protect what AFI were against what they are NOW and somehow try to seperate the 2....I understand their sentiment.

    b.... s....

Why THE FUCK would anyone want to separate or protect what they were and what they are now?

BREAKING NEWS! They are precisely WHATEVER the fuck they want to be at any given moment and nobody but them get to decide or manage that. Nobody forces you to listen to their new stuff (as nobody forces me to like or listen to Burials) but nobody gets to label other people based on what they prefer. AFI music is theirs, not anyone else's. THEY want changes, THEY want to be different, who are you or anyone else to be against it?

Sorry for the strong words, I am not mad or anything xD

  40. O.... f....

A lot of people get pissed off about the whole thing because A.F.I. are looked at as sellout's for going mainstream. It's sad to know they're not like the punks they used to be, but nonetheless I'm still happy for them and the good times I've had going to their early year gigs. FYI Girls Not Grey on the album Sing the Sorrow was the start of their success; Miss Murder was more like the peak.

  41. m.... ....

I will post this on Nov. 30 this year to open the Holiday season!!! :)

  42. M.... O....

@dontwatchitman miss murder u idiot...i gotts stop resding commde

  43. s.... ....

    Forever walking through December!

  44. C.... ....

    I love that album

  45. C.... ....

Yeah same here I got into AFI through "Miss Murder" too. Funny thing is though, is that I like their old stuff way more lol I'll agree that no album of theirs sucks, I am not a huge fan of "Crash Love" though

  46. M.... J....

they have been brilliant since nitro records, don't like it don't fucking listen. simple enough for the simpletons right?

  47. A.... ....

You don't need to read the comments to watch the video either :P

  48. S.... ....

    Such a needed statement.

  49. G.... F....

great band ! i have been listening them since 2006, i love every album, great lyrics, great songs, AFI + VSTROM = MULISHAAA!!!

  50. E.... J....

THE ALBUM BLACK SAILS IN THE SUNSET IS AN ALBUM WHICH REALLY SUCKS

  51. M.... Q....

    thanks for whining

  52. s.... ....

yet now they are doing blaqk audio and afi has been postponed into the indefinite future )=

  53. C.... B....

this is fucking poetry ! *applaud*

  54. D.... ....

Don't read comments. Your problem solved. Who cares what others think.

  55. F.... ....

    YESSSSSS!!!! well said

  56. D.... S....

that was in 2000 when he said it.it when they were pumping out genius song after genius song in Dexters little studio.its funny cause the jocks, the spooky kids, the skaters, the surfers, the punk rockers, the hardcore kids, the metal kids and all that don't listen to their stuff anymore cause they changed...now december underground was actually borderline.if it didn't have "Rabbits are road kill on route 66" it would of been a bad album.its funny that song was written in 2001 when they were geniuses.

  57. A.... ....

this's always been a favourite ^^ - remember listening to this before I got to school.. oh, I'm getting old.

  58. E.... ....

I'm not one of those people that say you're not a real fan if you don't like the old stuff and/or the new stuff, but seriously, if you haven't heard this song.....

Its like all things A.F.I are channeled into one euphoric eruption of symphonic deliciousness X_X

  59. S.... I....

@dontwatchitman I though they were already popular with Silver and cold, shit son you're young.

  60. M.... E....

this songs on warped tour 2001. brilliant hard poetic great beat... just a perfect song

  61. D.... ....

Will we ever hear a AFI like this again?

  62. A.... ....

These people below are about the most ignorant people I've ever rea dfrfom.

  63. A.... S....

my 3 fav albums r all hallows e.p/the days of the phoenix e.p/ shut your mouth and open ur eyes... i just ordered all 3 on fye :)

  64. J.... U....

@carefulsubliminal I love it when someone can dislike new AFI without calling them sellouts. I think your comment may have made my day, my love for post Black Sails AFI set aside.

  65. S.... S....

@hatchet0dude your just mad he never liked you.

  66. M.... P....

I don't really like the direction they took after Black Sails, but I wouldn't consider them sell-outs. While their music may seem a little bit more 'hot topic core', AFI always had elements of dark romantic/gothic rock, and as the band and its individual members developed and the music became more polished, it's easy to mistake a transition to a more refined, and less raw (or 'less punk') sound for selling out.

    /rant

  67. J.... T....

    @hatchet0dude like you?

  68. k.... ....

Love this song. They used to be so good. <3

Always will be my favorite band.

  69. J.... U....

I love this. It's almost like Girl's Not Grey or Ether, but with a strong hardcore vibe.

  70. a.... ....

sucks jade doesnt post his tabs on the afi site anymore. i used to stay up for hours learning how to play black sails and days of the pheonix

  71. f.... ....

afi is amazing music if ur watching this video im glad you like it and if u dont ok dont tll us we really dont care

  72. T.... I....

This song was all I listened to last winter......aaahh walking trough a snow-covered forest at dusk/twilight with this song stuck in my head.....beautiful...

  73. v.... ....

heh, I love all of the foreshadowing/ theme continuity in AFI's work - "forever walking through december" - several years later, decemberunderground comes out - on Black Sails Davey talks about rising from ashes, like a Phoenix, Sing The Sorrow's year of the rabbit theory/three hares symbol on decemberunderground etc. - even Crash Love had an anti organized religion song, Sacrilege, a trend that's been going since "New Patron Saints And Angels", "God Called In Sick Today", "The Lost Souls" etc.

  74. M.... ....

@JaMzBoT500 haha, i always thought he said a world of violence. lol

  75. p.... ....

@Jagguar20 Charity shop for £1.99. So freaking lucky I was!

  76. C.... A....

@photodanny20 You lucky you! How did you get it?

  77. P.... M....

I have listened to this song 30 times in a row. why you ask? cause its just that awesome

  78. p.... ....

I own this EP on CD. 1 of 500 aww yeah

  79. j.... b....

A world of violets?? how QUEER!!! But... i still love you davey!!! x

  80. B.... M....

This is actually the song that got me into the band. Always will be my favorite song by them.

  81. M.... ....

    this is the good shit

  82. D.... ....

    @thebeautifulthief

with a name beautifulthief, i'm not surprised you like all AFI albums, seriously... true AFI is pre-STS

  83. H.... ....

@6millionlies14 If you think this is a shitty song, why bother wasting your time and energy on arguing with someone over and over again about something entirely unrelated to the song or AFI at all? All it takes is your choice to walk away and ignore further confrontation. Everyone likes different music for different reasons, and even different songs/albums/eras from the same bands. What does it matter in the end what someone else listens to? Why not find others who like the same music as you do?

  84. s.... ....

@missjuggalettehomie Music might change, but what about davey's emo hairstyle on decemberunderground ? pretty guy for me. There is actually a band that has never change their music , Bad Religion ..30 years , exact music. It is actually annoying, the same sound in each song jaj ...

  85. s.... ....

@missjuggalettehomie hell no bro or sis :P , come on , you can't compare old stuff
(black sails in the sunset, sing the sorrow , the art of drowning) with the new shit...
you don't really have to listen to each album to realize that they've changed
just see davey's change and you'll know , but besides that their music has changed to ..
they just sold out , as simple as that ... another good example of selling out that you can notice
easly is rise against with their last album .. (:

  86. S.... S....

forever walking through december forever long for a sighn of life. I love AFI so much

  87. F.... ....

This song is great, but does anyone have any idea how Adam Carson plays the ride in the chorus and the hi-hat in the verse so fast? I am a drummer, and yes, I know about rebounding, and wrist technique, but I can't get this song's speed down. Any ideas/suggestions?

  88. C.... G....

@AFIxMan very true, AFI (in my opinion) have maintained all awesomness, i started listenin in 2006 nd my love for them is just ever growing :D and i love their old stuff just as much as i love there newer stuff, and for those who think they sold out, no, no they diddnt sell out :D nuff said

  89. F.... ....

It's Halloween! Rock your ass off to this shit!

  90. M.... B....

By far AFI's most memorable albums/ep's..... Ahhhh

  91. e.... ....

It's like he CHOOSES lyrics that are impossible to hear. Good thing I know them.

  92. c.... s....

T-T my lifes too crazy and this song always reminds me

  93. n.... ....

    i wannnnnt this song

  94. J.... D....

I can't believe this almost has 50,000 views. That's awesome

  95. B.... ....

    @DaveyH123 know*

  96. a.... b....

Im so obsessed with this song :0 Thumbs up if you agree?

  97. D.... ....

    post-STS sucks major dick

  98. k.... ....

CrashLove isnt bad. its an amazing album. its just different. you want a album to hate? pick december underground theres no redeeming factors of that album

  99. B.... ....

@AFIForever1 Well , I think he tried to make his voice harsh and accidently made a throat scream and loved it (don't we all love his screams ? ) . He never stoped using them , and got used to the pain eventually. He did fucked up his voice a bit , but still sounds great :) . I guess he was born to sing.

  100. B.... ....

@AFIForever1 He makes vocal chord screams not diaphragm, as good as they sound they still mess up your voice. And yep it hurts.
