Afghan Whigs, The - Debonair Lyrics

Hear me now and don't forget
I'm not the man my actions would suggest
A little boy, I'm tied to you
I fell apart, that's what I always do

This ain't about regret
My conscience can't be found
This time I won't repent
Somebody's going down

Feel it now and don't resist
This time the anger's better than the kiss
I must admit when so inclined
I tend to lose it than confront my mind

'Cause it don't bleed and it don't breathe
It's locked its jaws and now it's swallowing
It's in our heart, it's in our head
It's in our love, baby, it's in our bed

Tonight I go to hell
For what I've done to you
This ain't about regret
It's when I tell the truth

And once again the monster speaks
Reveals his face and searches for relief
A little boy is tied to you
Attracted only 'til it comes unglued

And it don't bleed and it don't breathe
It's locked its jaws and now it's swallowing
It's in our heart, it's in our head
It's in our love, baby, it's in our bed

Tonight I go to hell
For what I've done to you
This ain't about regret
It's when I tell the truth

Tonight I go to hell
For what I've done to you
This ain't about regret

    Highpoint of the 1990s

  7. hitman6191

The beginning of this song bassline sounds like the beginning To Jackson 5 song ABC 40: sec into ABC

  8. Martin King

    frickin' love this bass line

  9. Cat

This whole album is a narcissists diary “The thing about regret is when I tell the truth “

  10. Debra Bobebra

The pain in this song is so evident. I love it. It reminds me of my life.

  11. Matt Celis

one of the only rock bands that actually rocks nowadays

  12. USTRA 64

    Grunge is not dead !!!!

  13. k asdfg

    They were TOTALLY underrated.

  14. Green Chicharrón

Everytime I'd listen to that beginning riff, I'm instantly transported to the times in the boiling summer haze where I was cruising alone in St. Marks with this song on full blast. Crazy how each song we'd listen to from the past holds a memory.

  15. thesandyohms

    “once again the monster speaks”

  16. Kevin Allen Toole

Absolutely, positively, 100% [email protected]$$...... fosho....

  17. JJoy

I can remember 1993, high school graduation party all nighter, it was dawn and on the tv came Conjure me. I was mesmerized, in love with this band from that day on. Couldn't understand how everyone wasn't in love with them too. So underrated. A hidden treasure.

  18. bladerunner1b

Ahh the Cincy/Dayton Ohio music scene that never was back in the early 90's. You at least got The Afghan Whigs, The Breeders, and Guided by Voices

    But there was more..

    It would have rivaled Seattle.

  19. Kimbap Tempura

One of those bands I wanted to like. The music is good but every time that whiny emo douche bag opens xir's mouth it sounds like MEEEEEEN STRUUUUUUUUUUUUU AAAAAA TIOOOOOOOON

  20. ave423

Oh the things I used to fill the void of a broken heart. This album on full blast, high as fuck... man, patchwork. Thanks Greg and Co. <3

  22. Lincoln Hirschi

The greatest song off of the greatest album by the greatest band of the'90s. And that's about the long and short of it.

  23. Choco Manger

Totally forgot about this band and this song until Billy Corgan recently mentioned them at a concert, talking about how his band opened for them about 30 years ago.

  24. apemantus67

Blood on the Tracks for the 90s. Yeah, the album is that great!

  25. Rickradical Brown

    Fuckin awesome

  26. 666cfc

Does anybody else consider this a "concept album"? Not anything grandiose like The Wall, but I feel like all the songs are connected somehow including the cover song.

  27. alen Parra

This songs got a nice little hook that kinda finds a comfy space in your mind for the day...

  28. Max Bebop

Interesting that “it don’t bleed and it don’t breathe” was in the first track on the album “if I were going” and is repeated in this song

  48. Berlin Saint Clair

I could listen to the whole Gentlemen album on repeat for hours and still just be in bliss! Thank you to Ohio. The home of my grandparents and the Afghan Whigs!!!!

  49. george eskiadis

This band was too good for Americans to appreciate at the time. They were too busy with their second rate "grunge" bands, hick country music and gangsta rap garbage. Hence the fact that this amazing band was more successful and more respected outside their country. Especially all over Europe.

  50. Quentin 33

Ya i have a man crush on Greg, lol. Dude is awesome! Love The Gutter Twins too.

  52. Alec Womack

I was lucky enough to wake up at 4am for a glass of water to see this playing on MTV 90's house videos. Immediately was stopped in my tracks, not because MTV was actually playing a music video for a change but how I managed to miss this band growing up in the 90's! I love this song!

  63. Tassala Attai

can someone please tell me the meaning of the bands name? I did some research and came up with nothing

  64. The Engineer

This song is truly hallmark. The album from which it came is one of the best albums of its time. I just want to sit back with a glass of wine and remember the days. Thank you for posting it.

  65. Matthew Hulliger

  66. Scottie Ray

This video captures working-class 'white' America fairly well.

@Tiernan Flaherty With everything...the neighborhood and the guys working on their cars, the kids on all that plastic Walmart kiddie pools, the bowling alley fights...there's still a large portion of people who live like this

  71. Bart Tare

Damn, that's a great fucking video.

  72. brian W

Best concept album! The story of a sex addict, right from the get-go. He starts off by explaining about this "demon" that sits upon his chest, waves his finger at him every night. It's his addiction. He's a buoy tied to his woman, tied to his drug. He falls apart, that's what he always does. "You're say'n the victim doesn't want it to end. Good, I get to dress up and play the assassian again." He's justifying his behaviors. He's thinking, "She doesn't mind, so I'm going to keep on doing it." Listen to the second song on Side B (sorry, I have it on cassette. The female singing. This is her response to his actions. "You hurt me, baby. I flinch so when you do. Your kisses discourage me." She;s had enough and finally she is speaking out for herself. The next two songs he struggles with the choices he's been making, but he's trying to bring his anger back at himself than hold her responsible for his actions. Then the ending, "Father Woodrow, lead us into closing prayer." The second to last song slide right into the last. He's telling her how much he loves her, trying to fight between the addiction of lust and realizing that she is a human being, that he is trying to understand love. Then the ending... soothing. A melody of instruments, representing that he has come to some kind of understanding. And then it starts all over. The beginning melds right into the end which melds into the beginning: an unbroken circle of addiction. I picked this cassette up, brand new, probably at Camelot Records (what use to be a mall music chain store). Over the next 10 years I listened to it, but never got it. In 2002, dealing with my own issues, it struck me one day, that this is truly a concept album. Now, 15 years later, I've still got in in the tape deck of my 2001 PT Cruiser. Greg Duli is a lyrical mastermind. Beautiful album from start to finish... to start again.

  73. James Bell Jr

    Rocking bassline

  74. Martin ILLUMINA

The band ".Live " album Mental Jewelry is way much better than this ...

    jed_beezel

Martin ILLUMINA why do you have to bash the Whigs to praise a good record? The Whigs were visionaries twenty years ahead of their time.

  90. rza lza

I first heard this song when I was about 12 or 13 and I was hooked

  91. Gary Beltrand

Rick's unique and amazing guitar playing was such a big part of their sound and it's a crime they released an album as The Afghan Whigs without him on it.

    Were are this great band?

  98. Dimitra Kambouris De Hoog

i saw them live danced right in front. later that night walking around down town SLC my friends and i walked past their bus as they were getting on it. He stopped and pointed to me and said " I remeber you"

    Berlin Saint Clair

Dimitra Kambouris De Hoog That is cool as hell! I'm so glad you shared that story. AW shows were the best?! My friend and I made our way back stage in Cali in '94 when I was 19 and Greg Dulli planted huge red lipstick kisses on both of us. We just about died and went to Heaven.

    Katherine Etzel

same with me but it was the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Love AF's, wish I had seen them live sometime.

  99. Evan Beckstedt

How long was Steve Earle their drummer? I reslly loved the power behind his playing.

    Joel Shields

This was his last record with them. While Black Love and 1965 are great records, they definitely lost something after they fired Earle. The subsequent drummers were more precise, but sometimes being a little loose is a good thing.
