Aesop Rock - Zero Dark Thirty Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Look
Unsigned hype
Front line aeronauts flurry
Zero dark thirty
Zero friends minotaur-fugly stepchild
Evoke lunch jumped over plunging necklines
Up, beside tongue-tied hungry enzymes
Devolved into mothmen munching textiles
Punisher
Out past go-time
Back 10 fried worms chubbier
Brown grass both sides
Canned food
Manmade tools
Lanacane, band aids, mandrake root
Bindle on a broomstick, pancaked shoes
And a handshake-proof campaign, can’t lose
Can’t gain
Smoke out moles like a force of nature
Pray fortune return to his favor
Swiftly
Maybe in the form of a nest egg
Maybe in the form of a tesla death ray
Or a solid gold scene with something better to celebrate
Than powder on a face like a flatfoot on jelly day
M-m-moral compass all batshit
Spinning in the shadows of immoral magnets
Are we supporting the artist or enabling the addict
I mean, I guess it matters to me
I wish it mattered to you
How a thousand virtues
Kick the same bucket like chinatown turtles

[Hook]
Roving packs of elusive young become
Choke-lore writers over boosted drums
In the terrifying face of a future tongue
Down down from a huntable surplus to one

[Verse 2]
(Check his own) Breakneck pulse
Over colors in a drain
That emote sugar skulls in the rain
Flower-eyes melting
Guided by a levy made of that tile, tilting
Quarter up and headed for the kill screen
No corner cut, no build team
Only a particularly menacing
Angle perpendicular to everything
Boys room cherry bomb
Boy/goon very much runnin' with the devil in the mellotron
Hello
Here’s where a tale of caution
Pounds coffin nails
To bootlegs of Hawkwind, saw tooth
Nevermind straw to gold
Spin hearts on sleeves into heads on poles
Arm in the maw
Fish out pith like a business card in a jar at the mall
A-alike androids dreaming of carbon applause
Get stuffed with cartoon cigars
Cold pack, neti-pot, home to roost
Around folk backed into what they most lampoon
Shook to the fevered brow and broke ankles
Daisy, declawed pound, no thank you
Fade me
Failed all basic training
But I spent a couple groundhog days with a changeling
Silhouette the god’s last cigarette
Anything less would be ri-god-damn-diculous

[Hook]
Roving packs of elusive young become
Choke lore writers over boosted drums
In the terrifying face of a future tongue
Down down from a huntable surplus to one

Aesop Rock Zero Dark Thirty Comments
  1. aksenov777

It would take me quite a research to fully appreciate it, but from what I got from the go I can tell that lots of people just won't understand how dope this actually is.

  2. chantel m

Whoever did the captions I love you :3 @ 2:00

  3. Luis Anghel

I listened to this when I was 12 in 2011, it's 2019 and I'm 20 and yet I still have no idea what he's talking about.

I love the wordplay though, a lot more now than then.

  4. D0P3 F13ND

The "unsigned hype" in the beginning is enough to get my attention. The rest is just mind blowing...

  5. Excellence

Literally proven the best rapper of all time, not even opinion, it's science.

  6. L Fenney

The best lyricist ive ever heard!

    Aesop: "Hello!"

    *English subtitles: "Hello! :3"*

  9. Sweet Tooth from Twisted Metal

I wish I could understand what he was talking about. Rappers like this sound like they're talking in some code language and I feel so lost.

    Jake Ryan

Go to rap genius and start reading. You'll thank me later. Then you'll be able to start understanding how he expresses himself.

  13. řąńďøm Ďü5h

Why is this comment section so condescending... Like the song is fire and has a lot of meaning behind the lyrics, but damn some people can have a higher-than-thou attitude

    Bunkuio

That’s what happens when you look in the comments of underground shit. You get the same shit from DOOM and Rob Sonic.

  14. emcee equals DuB

Aesop is a god damned genius, the worlds greatest rapper, hands down no question.

  19. J Webster

Lotta years, I've slept in/on a lotta things.. my mom's arms where she nurtured me to life.. a cradle.. a bunk bed with my brothers.. a carseat.. the floor underneath my dad's desk while he typed away at the computer.. a stiff mattress.. a trampoline.. a hammock.. the desk in class.. friends' couches.. the shitty racks in the squadbay at MCRD San Diego.. the other shitty racks in barracks 14012 at Camp Pendleton.. the OTHER shitty cots in the SWA huts and the dirt in Iraq.. the sidewalk in Pacific Beach.. the Metro in DC.. a neighbor's yard filled with snow in Ketchikan..... these are just some things I've slept on in my life.. but you know what I've never slept on..? Aesop Rock and the rest of the Rhymesayers crew.. shoutout to all yall.. peace n respect.

  42. Andrew Baker

    Legendary

  43. Aiden Bouc

Part of what makes aes great imo is that his beats are always incredible, his voice is great, his flow is impeccable, his vocabulary is massive, and he looks very normal/average to me which makes it all hit home a lot more like "woah, this is a real person"

  44. Darth Obscurity

Everyone here thinks there is an objective standard by which lyrics are judged; there isn't. It's all opinion, sorry kids.

The best selling artist is the best in each genre. This is the most objective way you can look at it. Everything else is an opinion. Quite literally.

  45. will kateley

    I still care Aesop!💯❤️

  46. conthedon

Y’all now there’s a animation of paintings on the wall this probably took a year to make this music video

  48. M G

    ANYTHING LESS WOULD BE RI-GODDAMN-DICULOUS!

  49. Quin McFly

Something I find interesting about Aesop’s music is that because of how difficult it is to perfectly understand everything we insert our own meanings that relate to us at a certain time

  50. waitandrender

    "Canned food
    Manmade tools
    Lanacane, band-aids, mandrake root"

    Flow is sick

  51. cortos _

love this album. previously I've only spent time listening to 3 or 4 songs off the album but now bothered listening to the whole thing through and started appreciating the rest of it a lot more.
I do that a lot with Aesop's music. It takes a few listens in a different mood before i start enjoying a number of other songs

  52. Jason Andrews

We need someone like this in the underground right now. All we got is a bunch of metal heads and depressed X fans and shit...
I try to be different but no one be fuckin with my real shit. They play my fake ass hype songs and shit. But damn if someone can spit like this right now in the underground, other than me, i'd be happy...

    hellokittybebop

Shit aesop rock 1 in million where lucky if we ever get someone as well versed as him

Honestly I have a vast hip-hop library with some songs dating from the early late 80s to present. I have countless favorites but nothing that is too hard to hit the skip button on.

However, You. Just. Dont. Skip. AESOP ROCK.

is this guy like the James Joyce of rap or something?

    Bazooka Tooth

    Carl Murphy

Yes, I’ve never heard that comparison but I agree.

  72. Sean Deal

Aesop Rock is a sexist shithead. The kind of rap asshole that I actually caught calling another dude a "pussy".
He is actually foul and heartless somewhere in his music content. The man is right now spying and stealing from me for a government against drugs rip off project. He is working with government stealing from artists. Everyone never listen to this dork again. EVER.

  73. Seth Nicholls

    Forever fan ❤

  74. Tallullah

"Smoke out moles like a force of nature "...

  81. Flaven80

So fucking glad i found this guy. thanks all!

  82. MrRscott08

His lyrics are using many common words and he does use some words that may require a dictionary to understand. However, the challenge with his music isn't in the singular words he uses but with the actually meaning of the bars. The average music fan want an immediate release and not have to actually take the time to think. However, there are music fans that enjoy music that isn't surface level. I feel like as music fans we should expect more than just surface level gibberish from some talentless rappers of today.

  83. LORD KING PHAROAH

is the rumor about TRUMP..... true all those immigrants are at the
border ....... expecting him to die at any second ......... but hey fucket......
herd the cartels are going to try king saudi too....... it being friday

what unfolds in the hours to come......... like an assassination

  84. Highchi

Since when tf did Jimmy Fallon become a rapper??! Damn time does fly by doesn't it..

  85. Killian King

I really like this artist but holy shit this fan base is cancerous.

  86. yes ok

aesop shouldve been really fuckin famous but the most lyrical ones never on the surface

  87. Richard M.

    ⚡️🔮🦋🔮⚡️

  88. Jake Olsen

M , who is better rap god you or your imagination ?

  89. Kevin Fiddick

Are we supporting the artist or enabling the addict?
    I mean,
    I guess it matters to me;
I wish it mattered to you.

  90. BeatBubbles

Don't really get the condescending attitudes towards some of his music. Sometimes poetry spells it out for you, sometimes it encourages you to find your own meaning between the lines. I often find that certain types of art that made no sense to me at a previous point in my life is suddenly filled with meaning. It's just how art works, has to be judged on a deeply personal level. Saying you find no meaning in his music is one thing. Saying it has no meaning just doesn't make any sense.

  91. Bantu Slim

Aesop Rock is the definition of Esoteric! No.1.

  92. Beto Escal

Im loving it and havent even gotten my kids meal that comes with its toy yet that puts a smile on your face because im fucking loving it because its good like some clean field goal....

  93. Beto Escal

Just growing into many new levels and zones and just growing in a rare way i guess but sick sweet and clean as fuck.
