I buy the savior interpretation especially in the context of Aesop's song "One of Four." Aesop lived in a dark place and was rescued much in the same way this kid was, and he never seems to blame others for his fall. Sometimes tragedy can't be avoided, but sometimes you get lucky enough to have a hand to pull you out of the abyss.

I'm pretty sure the message comes in the very last line of the song. The mother's negligence is disregarded as "everybody says, good dog". The mother should have been reprimanded for her incompetence and not making sure Ruby was safe. The family was lucky that the dog was in a fortunate position, but the child SHOULD have died due to the mother's negligence, and she is not chastised in the slightest.
