Aesop Rock - Bug Zapper Lyrics

[Verse 1:]
The first step is a doozy, it's roulette with a mood ring
The birth of an old slang, the death of a new speak
A permanent post-game, a spitter with bridge trolls
Skirting the copay, divvy the death toll
Maneuverable codenames, alerted and mobile
Familiar rising, and furnacing cold piles
Resilient style kings, impossibly tantrum
Wandering wild things, obelisk phantoms
On linoleum or lava, leaders of a leadfoot fauna
His left source blunt force trauma
Not pillar of the commune, a splinter off the pagan
Who vote off the elusiveness of truth and exultation
From the point of view of students labeled putrid little aphids
By the beautiful and cryogenic stasis
Sadists, meanwhile makers of a hideous whatnot
Committed to a lowdown Sisyphus up-rock
Are shaving at a truck stop, aging exponentially
Homie, no myth flowers grow where he piss
And I still row boats outta bottles without abandon
To shrink into the sunset bumping Pachelbel's Canon
In D motherfucker, the author of the artistry
May or may not be weeping to an automated pharmacy

Hello. Hello? Shit

[Hook:]
Too geeked up to even keep it down
Too peaced out to even be around
Too beat up to even breathe it out
(Too freaked out to even leave your house) [x5]

[Verse 2:]
You wish you could dance more, I wish you would talk less
My gentleman transformed, to bringers of offed heads
Moments of land war, my Lazarus species
Tattered and bruised up, from back in the cheap seats
Hackers on crew cuts, foam at the mush mouth
Gag at the news truck, notably unsound
Dragging his clown shoes, food on his moustache
Raggedy hounds tooth, zilch on a bus pass
I'm good, house at the beach of expelled hubcaps
Black lawn, backyard melting into Lovecraft
Bad yarn spun by the hum of the bug zapper
Of kings becoming runners, and runts becoming alphas
And underdogs with posters of a front-side Tony Alva
On the sticker laden walls above their uncle's Bowie albums
Graduate to flyers of an execrated sigil
And live to see another sexy generation fizzle
Out, keep rap homely
Bear claw slippers, over-sized Billy Joel tee
Fat-faced, potbelly, neckbeard, crow's feet
Rat nest, gross teeth, pock marks, goatee
I walk with Hawaii on the greenscreen behind me
So even the awkward pauses feel inviting
Standing at a landmark sleep drought keep out
Can't talk now too freaked out

[Hook]

  18. J.... D....

This particular song is so incredibly hot, partially because it's so relatable for me and that's my kind of beat. It's the beginning of the aggressiveness to get me hyped. I'm not going to get into who's the best even if Aesop is to me. Too many years of "KRS or Rakim?", it's all about our opinions and experiences. I have been able to write dopeness for many years, but only the past few years could I rhyme or even sing decently. You have to be able to let out your emotions for real. I'm glad to actually read wisdom on here. Nice change for you tube.

  19. R.... B....

There's not 1 single rapper who does it like Aes. Bruh bruh preserves the ART.

  28. N.... L....

he's such a legit producer as well as the most lyrical genius

    N.... L....

Well when you're best friends with Block since college you learn a thing or two

    N.... L....

    Yup this instrumental is lethal

    N.... L....

@Phoebe Xavier No it's not. This one is produced by Aesop

  29. S.... C....

I think Sandman has witty bars and says some funny shit.

    S.... C....

Steven Candelaria yeah i listened to all 3 lice albums and he's not BAD i'm just like why out of all artists did aesop make THREE whole albums with this dude 😂

  30. g.... ....

sounds like he's been listening to run the jewels

  31. D.... B....

Fucking hell bruvs. This was some other level shit.

  32. w.... ....

Bug Zapper is better than Cat Food by a long shot, this may be one of Aesop's best songs ever. No joke. <3

    w.... ....

@DIMENSION Hip Hop Yea! However the Live EP wasn't too much what I wanted. I don't really like Sandman. I like Aes and Blockhead, just them two. Or Hail Mary Mallon.

    w.... ....

@556FATHOMS ya, I am not really a fan of sandman either. I did see him live this year when he opened for Aes and HMM. I am not really sure why Aes wanted to do that EP with him lol he is too above and beyond sandman in intelligence, lyrical ability, style, etc. At least Rob Sonic can hold his own

    w.... ....

@DIMENSION Hip Hop Rob and Aes are the duo of the century. Sandman is a weirdo.

    w.... ....

It took me 3 months to realize I rhymed that? Do I have a natural talent?

    w.... ....

They're both dope but the beat on this one ... 0_o

  33. C.... ....

    this one is a sleeper

  34. 9.... ....

The birth of an old slang, the death of a newspeak

  35. l.... ....

This fucking beat is legit. Movie intro-worthy

  36. R.... ....

Just spent 8 hours analyzing this song with my gf. (yeah she's dope). This is why I say fuck Kendrick Lamar and logic and all those over over rated simple rappers. Kendrick has moments, but dude. Aesop. 8 hours. this song is incredibly dense. a lit major wet dream. fucking genius.

    R.... ....

Kendrick used to have a ghostwriter didn't he? I think butterfly is the first album he wrote himself. I saw this radio host talking to him about it, the guy seemed a little jealous he blew up maybe lol

    R.... ....

+Redsparrowe123 I agree. Kendrick is the only one that comes close to the realm of Aesop, Lupe, and Run The Jewels in my opinion

    R.... ....

no way! a friggin ghostwriter? in today's world? That's some real bitch shit if it's true. suckers today are too starstruck to face the fact that easy e always had ghostwriters and that was a long time ago, and easy to point out if people listen to the music. so many dope mcs and Kendrick Lamar? he's no Aesop, of course, but I liked him sometimes

    R.... ....

Too bad a Lit Major is fruitless.

    R.... ....

Redsparrowe123 nah dude. I actually really like Logic. he's not on the level of Aesop lyric wise but the guy is original. there's not another rapper like him. In terms of just being a guy that plays dungeons and dragons with gaming references throughout his music but also can talk about some dark moments in his past. It's unique. and hes still growing as an artist he hasn't peaked yet

  37. V.... ....

Aesop's solo releases are like the elder scrolls series, both are in their own leagues receptively to their competitors, both have years insane hype within their equally insane cult following and both give you 1000's of hours of quality reputability until the next even better installment.

    V.... ....

Damn that's awesome, one day they'll make it to lil ol' New Zealand and they'll sell out too.

    V.... ....

+DIMENSION ! Dont forget PROF he's no AESOP but he's rhysamesayers' partyboy

    V.... ....

@Dylan Clark i just started listening to a bit of Prof. I did see him live once w/ Atmosphere but that was before I knew who he was. Bar Breaker is a sick track

    V.... ....

Does Aesop keep re-releasing slightly different variations of None Shall Pass like Bethesda does Skyrim?

    V.... ....

Not too keen on the comparison. If you take a look at modern Elder Scrolls games from a design perspective they are quite shallow: the use and abuse the Skinner box technique and other Pavlovian technique to get you hooked up, but there is no depth to their narrative, no message to convey, no themes to explore, no choices that matter. It's Kafkaesque gaming.

Don't get me wrong I always buy them and always play them for hundreds of hours but they are glorified checklists. It's great entertainment but not great art.

On the other hand Aesop is all about meaning. He doesn't have the mass appeal of that franchise and is unfortunately often criticized by many (and I don't understand why, really)

  38. A.... S....

to freaked out to even leave you house...

    A.... S....

Insect Trainer, look around. Precisely because he's so good is why he'll never blow up. Only the people like us will ever think of him as "famous" or big time. I have known two people throughout my hip-hop life that make songs on this level. You will never hear of them without extensive looking and luck. we're lucky he has the exposure he does. thank def jux

    A.... S....

    so fucking relatable lol

  39. A.... S....

    UNREAL...Def Juxies never die.

    A.... S....

+Alex Soricelli i wholeheartedly miss Def Jux

  40. B.... R....

    please! more!!!

  41. V.... B....

    He's really come along as a producer/beatmaker

  42. t.... ....

Funky like a 70's vigilante flick.

  43. Y.... S....

Will anyone burn me a copy of Music for earthworms PLEASE!

  44. M.... ....

Aes is the only man nuts yet genius enough to mention Tony Alva, H.P. Lovecraft and Pachelbel in the same song.

    M.... ....

    +NLuKa420 Bowie albums much?

    M.... ....

    +NLuKa420 Oversized Billy Joel Teeth

    M.... ....

    +ambskater97 and Eric Blair

    M.... ....

    MasterBerry youre funny.

    M.... ....

    @Jon Vaughn Billy Joel T*

  45. J.... F....

    poc marks, go team.

  46. d.... ....

    fuck you!! take my money!!!!!

  47. T.... N....

This is how I feel when I hang out with my friend Derek sometimes..

    T.... N....

Lol random, how does Derek make u feel like this?

    T.... N....

@Kid Bizarre I get too freaked out to leave his house. lol

  48. T.... ....

Aesop's getting better?  How is this possible?!!!

    T.... ....

THEN HE GOT BETTER AFTER THIS. I don't understand it either, usually artists get worse.

  49. B.... D....

Aesop Rock is not the best rapper out there. In terms of complexity? Sure. He is great at that. His rhymes are very cryptic. But mind you, (while I'm accepting the fact that he is the best for all intents and purposes), he is only the best we have seen so far. The crown can always be taken by another diamond in the ruff. Contested.

Furthermore, drifting away from the aforementioned, Aesop Rock simply cannot cover the myriad life lessons, challenges, what have you in his rhymes. No one can. All a rapper can do is string together vowels and consonants from the foundation of their own experiences. There are rappers who do a great job at talking about what they have faced or what others in their lives have gone through (just for topic examples). In that sense, can we really say that any one rapper is the best at all? The best rapper(s) are the ones whom pull on your heart strings in a way that no one else can. We need to stop focusing so much on who the best artist is because art is subjective. I.e., a consensus can NEVER be reached anyways. Intrinsic.

Lastly, there may be rappers whom are so underground you may never know that they were better than Aesop Rock. You never know. But in the end it doesn't matter. In the beginning it doesn't matter. It just doesn't matter. They all (the rappers you listen to) have an ingredient to bring to the kitchen to cook up a very unique soup in your mind. Salient.

    B.... D....

@***** If by "we all know" you mean "I personally think" sure.

    D.... ....

  51. R.... L....

  56. V.... S....

    Yes, yes, yes, fucking yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees!

  57. M.... S....

I've listened to the Cat Food EP more than all of the HMM2 songs combined (not to diss HMM2), I was worried that Aesop was getting a little rusty but this EP gives me hope for his next solo release (which will probably sound more like this than HMM2 since thats a separate entity altogether)

  58. N.... W....

Yes! The captain of gutter funk rolls back on a gnarly beat and laces it. Too freaked out!

    N.... W....

    Captain of gutter funk?

    N.... W....

    Think about it, man.

    N.... W....

+Nathan Whitney Gutter funk, makes me think of Death Grips, but also a great way to describe Aesop's newer style haha.
