Adams, Bryan - Remembrance Day Lyrics

For our king and our country and the promise of glory
We came from Kingston and Brighton to fight on the front line

Just lads from the farms and boys from the cities
Not meant to be soldiers we lay in the trenches

We'd face the fighting with a smile - or so we said
If only we had known what danger lay ahead

The sky turned to grey as we went into battle
On the fields of Europe young men were fallin'

I'll be back for you someday - it won't be long
If I can just hold on 'til this bloody war is over

The guns will be silent on Remembrance Day
There'll be no more fighting on Remembrance Day

By October of 18 Cambrai had fallen
Soon the war would be over and we'd be returnin'

Don't forget me while I'm gone far away
Well it won't be long 'till I'm back there in your arms again

One day soon - I don't know when
You know we'll all be free and the bells of peace will ring again

The time will come for you and me
We'll be goin' home when this bloody war is ended

The guns will be silent on Remembrance Day
We'll all say a prayer on Remembrance Day

On Remembrance Day - say a little prayer
On Remembrance Day

Well the guns will be silent
There'll be no more fighting
Oh we'll lay down our weapons
On Remembrance Day

  11. h.... ....

better than any remembrance day poem. It's not "look at me im fighting for freedom". Just lads and boys, naive and optimistic, who just wanted to go home to their sweethearts.

    W.... A....

We Are Cupcakes that’s not even remotely true

    W.... A....

    That's what my teacher said

  20. O.... ....

    Just remember them.

  21. K.... ....

The Last Canadian Soldier to die in WW1 was George Lawrence Price, killed by a sniper during a patrol at 10:58 am on November 11 1918. A minute later a US Soldier Henry Nicholas John Gunther, was killed at 10:59 while trying to take a German machine gun nest. To think that those Soldiers almost made it to the armistice is hard they only need a few more minutes.

  22. M.... D....

Remembrance Day is a day of remembering those who paid the highest price for our freedom.. Lest We Forget...

  27. m.... f....

I have much respect for those who served in ww1 and ww2 but come on, the afghan war is way overrated, we have trades here in North America that have more danger and reason to do than the Afghan war(modern soldiers way to overrated its not ww2 over there.

    m.... f....

michael farrow Do you don't know shit!

    m.... f....

SupremeCmder , actually I do , not many people out there willing to limbwalk on a tree branch over a live 3 phase powerline so people can use electricity.. don't get me wrong I have tons of respect for the vets of ww1 and ww2 , modern soldiers are #4 on the most dangerous jobs , utility Arborists are # 2 ,I beleive Alaskan crab fishing may be #1

    m.... f....

michael farrow You can't compare a Job like a Soldier to Civilian Jobs. Civilian don't understand what Modern day soldiers go through. This isn't the same enemy where they fight in big Armies and they you can see them. They fight cowards in towels with IEDs and AKs.

  28. B.... C....

The Guns thank God the guns! UBIQUE!

  29. D.... H....

That cat at 3:15 does not give a fuck its in the middle of WW1.

I suppose if Kipling had penned his poem fifty years earlier, he would have titled it, LEST WE FORGET, rather than THE RECESSIONAL, which seemed to have been penned with the acknowledgement that the costs of Empire were outweighing the benefits of Empire, and lo it might soon be receding... It seems prophetic then, having been penned before the beginning of WW1 and WW2, which saw the end of the British Empire and the beginning of Pax Americana, the role of America as the world's policeman-bobby. "I speak softly, but I carryy a big stick" - TR. And so the Torch was passed, to a "new generation", albeit an American one, to use President Kennedy's phrase in his Presidential Inauguration Address. ... These days, the phrase LEST WE FORGET is associated with Remembrance Day to honour they who sacrificed themselves (albeit, under penalty of court martial if they did not) to protect the free world, though it be full of ungodly and wicked persons, and one which has made legal that which is immoral... I think it is important to remember the origin of the phrase LEST WE FORGET, so here is Kipling's poem penned for Queen Victoria's Birthday :

The Recessional, by Rudyard Kipling :

God of our fathers, known of old,
Lord of our far-flung battle line,
Beneath whose awful hand we hold
      Dominion over palm and pine—
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
    Lest we forget—lest we forget!

    The tumult and the shouting dies;
The Captains and the Kings depart:
    Still stands Thine ancient sacrifice,
An humble and a contrite heart.
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
    Lest we forget—lest we forget!

    Far-called our navies melt away;
On dune and headland sinks the fire:
Lo, all our pomp of yesterday
Is one with Nineveh and Tyre!
Judge of the Nations, spare us yet,
    Lest we forget—lest we forget!

If, drunk with sight of power, we loose
Wild tongues that have not Thee in awe,
Such boastings as the Gentiles use,
Or lesser breeds without the Law—
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
    Lest we forget—lest we forget!

For heathen heart that puts her trust
In reeking tube and iron shard,
All valiant dust that builds on dust,
And guarding calls not Thee to guard,
For frantic boast and foolish word-
Thy Mercy on Thy People, Lord!

The scenes of marching soldiers, along with the background music, starting at 4:27, are epic and patriotic. The ending, along with the music, starting at 5:22, is epic and sublime.

  44. D.... M....

Not my style of music - but as a son of a mother relieved by your forces WWII I can hardly complain.  Does it matter how we remember, I say no; but let us remember with gratitude.

i liesond to this song at school today
i love this sond and its sad :(

  49. T.... M....

Truly amazing, and i doubt the numerous whiners and complainers today mind that the vast majority of soldiers that selfishly DEFENDED our country were "privileged" white males who "selfishly" fought to protect our women and children. Nobody back then would dare bitch and complain that the men returning in body bags didn't accurately reflect the racial and gender demographics of the population.

  50. C.... C....

    Thank you

  51. C.... J....

Did anyone else have this play for Remembrance ceremonies in school as a kid? This song was so epic to hear in the auditorium lol

    C.... J....

Cody Joyce I was in high school when it came out. But I remember when they rolled out all the TVs into the gym to show us this new Bryan Adams video. I remember thinking finally something written in the last 50 years. This and victory day.

    C.... J....

    I got this played yesterday

    C.... J....

All the time! Haha I had to hold a candle lit the entire video, and got burned by some of the damn wax! Good memories, but above all, lest we forget! ❤️

  52. v.... ....

I didn't cut off anything, as this was the ONLY footage I had to start with. I didn't realize there was a dedication. If I had it to begin with it would have been there for sure! Thanks for viewing!

  53. J.... S....

Wondering why you cut off the first few seconds? The dedication? It was the artists wish to have this video dedicated to those who had fought and been casualties from the wars.

  54. J.... F....

Lest we forget those who fought for our Country...most of whom never made it back to their loved ones...Lest we forget...and Thanks Bryan for writing this wonderful tune

  55. K.... ....

This song is for all American Canadian British and allied soldiers who fought and died so that we can remain free from Tyranny. And to those who are now fighting the war in the middle east and other conflicts around the world. may u return safely to your loved ones we are forever great full for those who fought and died for a country they love. Thank you so much for your service.

    K.... ....

Canada Britain and the USA united we stand close allies for life

    K.... ....

Since Bryan Adams is Canadian, this song would be for Canadian, British, New Zealand, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan, Malaya, Sri Lanka, Borneo, Hong Kong, East Africa Protectorate, Nyasaland, Rhodesia, Uganda, Gold Coast, Nigeria, Newfoundland, Honduras, Falkland Islands, Guiana, Jamaica and Australia.

But please never try to compare the American involvement to the remainder of the world! The Americans only decided to enter the war in the final phase between 1917 & 1918 so they didn't lose ground to Mexico! America also only entered as an associated power and not an ally.

Check WW2.... you'll find the same!

    Heroes today, cowards yesterday.

    K.... ....

They weren't united.... USA only cared about their own interests!

    K.... ....

It doesn't matter. American soldiers came over fought and died same with WW2. All soldiers on the allies fought the same war and many died were taken prisoner or ended up missing. Just because they did not enter until later in the war doesn't mean they deserve less respect. Yes, the song is written for Canada Britain and other commonwealth/Dominion troops. Doesn't mean it cant apply to other soldiers who fought and died from their country and fighting for what they believed was right. In the end, we should remember all the soldiers who fought and died simply as that.

Ian Jackson Correct, Bryan's best opus I'd say.

    I.... J....

Ginger Scholes Waking Up The Neighbors has some good songs like “Thought I I Died and Gone To Heaven” and “Do I Have To Say The Words?”but my god, do the simple album covers look so bad I don’t want to hear them. Adams started to loose his charm after he hit 30 in what, 89.

  58. M.... .....

well done making this video, great tribute to the men....and a good song...Cheers
