Adam Ant - Whip In My Valise Lyrics

When I met you you were just sixteen
Pulling the wings off flies
When an old lady got hit by a truck
I saw the wicked gleam in your eyes

Your sadistic suits my masochistic
And there's a whip in my valise on yeah

Who taught you the torture?
Who taught ya?
Who taught you the torture?
Who taught ya?
Who taught you the torture?
Who taught ya?
Who taught ya?
Who taught ya?
Who taught you?

Describe the special punishment room
Over my garage,
There's a whipping post, a vertical beam
You have to be in charge

I paid a packet
For a new straight jacket
There's a whip in my valise oh yeah

Who taught you the torture?
Who taught ya?
Who taught you the torture?
Who taught ya?
Who taught you the torture?
Who taught ya?
Who taught ya?
Who taught ya?
Who taught you?

You put my head into the stocks
And then you went to choose a cane
But hey, your cat has got nine tails
You like to leave me lame

I can't thank her, my Sunday Spanker
There's a whip in my valise oh yeah

Who taught you the torture?
Who taught ya?
Who taught you the torture?
Who taught ya?
Who taught you the torture?
Who taught ya?
Who taught ya?
Who taught ya?
Who taught you?

Adam Ant Whip In My Valise Comments

Great Track & it was only b. Side to Zerox They were one of the best & most underrated Punk bands ever only got to see them once August 1979 age 14 in London supported by Angelic Upstarts

  2. G.... C....

Makes Mötley Crüe sound like The Sweet

  3. E.... &....

Has the PC world forgotten that entire fields of art, music, sculpture were experimental, absurd, etc...(consider the DaDa movement for one) My point: One need not be a pervert, or a torturer to enjoy the absurdist elements in the music from this band in this era.
Anyway, one really must be completely absent a sense of humour to not laugh at songs with lines like: "Who taught you to torture?"
Seems like alot of punk used this motif (especially the kind produced by Malcolm Mcklaren, of who I do not know a thing)
Being way too young to have experience this era, I can only go with my parents telling me it was more about an attitude, energy, and sound than about bondage lyrics. Later they vanish from Adams song writing, but even in these early LP's it seems more tongue and cheek. I could be wrong (it;s happened before) but, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

great song & b.side to Zerox one of the best punk singles ever..All pre Dirk stuff was so much better, I first saw them live in London Aug 1979 Zerox tour great days & one of the Best & most underrated punks bands ever.

Nov 1980 @ The Lyceum. What a night.

    P.... F....

@Roger Vink August 1979 at the Lyceum I first saw them supported by Angelic Upstarts great days & their last ever gig Dec 1979 electric ballroom.

  17. I.... H....

This album is superb, the production of it is insane. I was always into Adam Ant (though too young to be a fan at the time) but had never heard this album, I tried it after listening to Kings of the Wild Frontier and it became my favourite album of his. Table Talk is my fave probably but this is an awesome track.

  18. N.... G....

The original Dirk wears white sox never had this track on it ...

    N.... G....

Its because it was the B side of the Zerox single, and Dirk was changed for the US? market, including the sleeve

  19. F.... _....

found the lyrics very intriguing when I bough this aged about 9/10 :-)

  20. M.... G....

    love this album

  21. m.... h....

amazing album, can't wait for the show in April, thanks for posting...

  22. j.... ....

NIN did a cover of "Physical (You're So)" but I didn't know that they recorded this as well...

  23. J.... S....

    warm fuzzies.

  24. R.... R....

does anyone hear the blueprint for a few suede songs in this? lyrics, guitar, decedence, et., prolly was a regular on brett and bernerd's playlist.

  25. e.... ....

i bought this single in 1981 at the height of Ants mania. I was 14 and this song left an indelible impression on me.

  26. V.... ....

I have to admit, the song had the same effect on me, except of course as a woman. Adam Ant single-handedly introduced me to all the dark, provocative themes that shaped my life. I went on to become a professional dominatrix in NYC in my twenties and I don't think I would have had that adventure if it were not for Adam Ant!

  27. i.... ....

As we all know, how old someone was when they heard something is relative. I didn't hear of Adam and the Ants until I was about 13. I was in the 7th grade and a boy in the class brought in a double-sided tape that his brother had made. It was Friend Or Foe on one side and Kings Of the Wild Frontier on the other. I came back to school the next day and promptly traded my copy of Cujo and one of my Dad's old army shirts for the tape and the concert books for the albums on it. Love at first hearing!

  28. i.... ....

Yup! You said it! Did not know that NIN had covered this and will make it my mission to NEVER hear it! Don't get me wrong, I love a little NIN but there is NO comparing the two! :P

    i.... ....

Didn't know NIN covered this ... Know they did "Physical" ...

  29. i.... ....

Ha! That makes sense! :) My young ears where just learning to decipher, so please excuse any mishearings on my part! Maybe I should enter this into a mistaken lyric contest! LOL

  30. L.... M....

Can anybody tell me what the chords are for this?...

    L.... M....

Lizz Mattingly I want to learn the chords as well! Let me find out...

  31. i.... ....

"who taught you, little child?" one of the two favorite quotes from a song. The other is also an Adam Ant lyric oddly enough! ;) This was my first experience with "risky" lyrics, long before Prince!

  32. h.... ....

Not heard this for oh.....20 odd years at least! Fantastic stuff!!!

  33. S.... H....

This was mammoth at Middlesbrough Rock Garden!

  34. r.... ....

@dirkwears Great words my friend; it did the same for me, but I went out and became that rubber and leather clad young woman and lived that life of which you speak. Do I regret it? No, because I wouldnt be the me I am today without that experience. This is such an incredible song; its more of a "feeling" than a song, if you get me:)

  35. K.... ....

    " Physical ( You're So ) was a re worded Whip In My Valise " . I was about 14 or 15 when I read that.

  36. D.... T....

my all time fave antz songs was about 14 when i first heard this and changed me for ever

  37. V.... M....

@dirkwears beautifully described. yep the song is hot hot hot. Adam remains a force that shaped many!

  38. A.... B....

Top tune Adam at his very best.. ANTMUSIC 4 SEXPEOPLE

  39. Y.... ....

@src456 it probably sounded a little off to you because it was an entirely different song. the song nin covered was "physical," which adam ant later performed live with nin, shortly after proclaiming, "it's nice to be on stage with the best fucking band in the world."

  40. E.... L....

One of the greatest BDSM sing-a-long chorus's of all time....# WHO TAUGHT YOU TO TORTURE #

  41. P.... B....

@dirkwears I kind of know what you mean...about the youth part anyway. this is up there with Deutscher Girls...and funny. it was definitely the coolest band when i was 14. good age for it!

  42. D.... ....

An anthem of my misspent youth.....truly beautiful...

  43. A.... ....

woowwwww memories..............this made me Ant-fan in the 80's

    I still like the blackness...........

    am I emo now?

  44. s.... ....

"I'll pay the packet for a new straitjacket"

  45. g.... ....

One of, if not THE, best songs that Adam ever did. Absolutely divine (both him and song), thanks

  46. M.... P....

COULD A MAN BE ANY SEXIER? NO!

  47. B.... ....

    awesome song.

  48. S.... W....

dirkwears - agree with everything you say. Great track.

  49. S.... S....
