ABBA - The Day Before You Came Lyrics

Must have left my house at eight, because I always do
My train, I'm certain, left the station just when it was due
I must have read the morning paper going into town
And having gotten through the editorial, no doubt I must have frowned
I must have made my desk around a quarter after nine
With letters to be read, and heaps of papers waiting to be signed
I must have gone to lunch at half past twelve or so
The usual place, the usual bunch
And still on top of this I'm pretty sure it must have rained
The day before you came

I must have lit my seventh cigarette at half past two
And at the time I never even noticed I was blue
I must have kept on dragging through the business of the day
Without really knowing anything, I hid a part of me away
At five I must have left, there's no exception to the rule
A matter of routine, I've done it ever since I finished school
The train back home again
Undoubtedly I must have read the evening paper then
Oh yes, I'm sure my life was well within it's usual frame
The day before you came

Must have opened my front door at eight o'clock or so
And stopped along the way to buy some Chinese food to go
I'm sure I had my dinner watching something on TV
There's not, I think, a single episode of Dallas that I didn't see
I must have gone to bed around a quarter after ten
I need a lot of sleep, and so I like to be in bed by then
I must have read a while
The latest one by Marilyn French or something in that style
It's funny, but I had no sense of living without aim
The day before you came

And turning out the light
I must have yawned and cuddled up for yet another night
And rattling on the roof I must have heard the sound of rain
The day before you came

It's not possible to state which was their best song. About four or five ABBA songs are easily included in the TOP 10 pop songs ever. But, for sure, this is their most iconic video...

  10. R.... S....

Sorry all the great bands I love, like Beatles, Zepellin, Deep Purple and specially Alan Parsons, but the word MASTERPIECE has been raised to another level. Greets from Brasil

  11. M.... B....

I wish Agnetha would smile at me like that.

This is the best song for ABBA, which unfortunately it was their last one.

  16. R.... W....

ABBA's emotional journey is well reflected in their songs. How did they still manage to create masterpieces together, inspite of what they were going through in their personal lives? It is just amazing. I've been a huge Abba fan since childhood and I love singing all their songs.Cant thank them enough for filling my childhood with joy with their music

This piece never truly got the attention it deserved.
A pervasive sad poignancy through it all.
    And it truly was but sometimes;
sometimes the time comes for all to end.
    And while sad,
    it is good thus.

This beautiful lady must have stolen more male hearts across the globe than she could have ever imagined. The video 1.42 to 2.02 is utterly captivating, sensual without measurement, What red blooded man could not agree ?? (surely only one without a pulse !)

  53. B.... ....

I don’t understand this song . Their record producer did & said he didn’t have any understand how they recorded it . Both relationships had turned bad by this time. I sounds sad & lonely.

    Thank you, ABBA.🙄

  62. D.... ....

This is the peak of pop music. You just can't top this song within the pop genre. It's quite unique as well, it doesn't remind me of any other song I've ever heard. It's something enterily on its own.

So Beautiful Abba At there Best

  69. S.... P....

This sends shivers up my spine.. Agnetha looks a little like my ex-wife in this video, she burst into my life out of nowhere, gave me a few short years of incredible happiness, but who then just drifted slowly away... The train departing at the end is a perfect allegory. Beautiful song.

  70. L.... S....

Why is this rated as their second best song yet just seems like a load of rubbish to me

  71. C.... ....

    The lip bite at 1.04......

The timeless lyrics apply to how modern life then and even more greatly now has made us all lose ourselves and identities to artificially imposed systems of structure in school and work that constrain us all from ever reaching our full potentials as human beings as we fall into a never ending routine that becomes boring and soulless. Silver lining is finding a new love can relieve that to some degree which is the hope it brings to not let the systems voiding us to take us over completely and find solace that we can escape the monotony created by authorities who make us do their will.

  74. S.... H....

Oliver Keating I grew with you. It’s my very favourite ABBA song although I first heard it done by blancmange which is also very moving.

  75. J.... ....

  84. J.... S....

Living without aim...that's where I find myself now

  85. V.... ....

Sort of boring isn't it. No great ABBA harmonies. It seems to be about two minutes too long.....

  86. M.... -....

Esta canción me parece una genialidad. De mis favoritas no ya solo de Abba. Creo que ella está al borde de la afinación todo el rato. Aún así me gusta muchísimo. Viva Abba. Y que viva Agnetha

  87. S.... B....

why, why, why did they stop that story. they could still make a lot of good music

    S.... B....

Benny Andersson still makes great Music, but in Swedish, and not pop, but still great.

He should have kept the paper upside down for the first time. They would have succeeded on the first try. What time to lose.

  89. M.... C....

Everytime I think this song is wonderful...with a sensation of tragedy...

  90. B.... ....

Amazing how the boys B and B have even advised Agnetha to sing this flat or from 'ordinary' woman point of view, she just can't sound nothing but good and bright with her ABBA-style. :)

  91. V.... ....

I never came. I went MGTOW in 1997. Whoever I was supposed to marry might as well get some cats because I have no desire to be divorce raped.

  92. B.... ....

ABBA makes sentimental and again and again it is a journey into the past for me, if I listen to them ... As children (about 12 - 14, .. ca.1979-'82) we, 2 boys and 2 girls, "played" ABBA's, private life with kisses and such ;)) .. I was Benny ;) ... Björn's guitar was a badminton racket, the microphones 2 flashlights ... also We have not seen each other for over 30 years, probably since their separation, if, then you play right;) ... Thanks, ABBA, for a peaceful, mobile-free childhood :)
