ABBA - Hey Hey Helen Lyrics
So at last you're free
It's the way you wanted it to be
And the price you paid
To become a woman of today
Is it worth the pain to see the children cry
Hey hey Helen
Now you live on your own
Hey hey Helen
Can you make it alone
(Yes you can)
So you're free at last
And beginning to forget the past
Does it make you sad
But you're right, you had to take a second chance
So you fight to find your freedom
Hey hey Helen
Now you live on your own
Hey hey Helen
Can you make it alone
Hey hey Helen (hey hey Helen)
What's the matter with you
Hey hey Helen (hey hey Helen)
Don't you know what to do
(Yes you do)
(Ahah, yes you do yes you do)
(Ahah, yes you do yes you do)
Hey hey Helen
Now you live on your own
Hey hey Helen
Can you make it alone
Hey hey Helen (hey hey Helen)
What's the matter with you
Hey hey Helen (hey hey Helen)
Don't you know what to do
Hey hey Helen (hey hey Helen)
Now you live on your own
Hey hey Helen (hey hey Helen)

What a powerful sound this ABBA music and song !!!! Very beautiful and powerful voices !!!!
All perfect in this Swedish pop group of the 70's !!!!
Eu só sei da existência dessa música pq eu fui no Google saber se tinha uma música com o nome Hellen kkkk

Oh yes , ABBA is one Super Pop Band in all times !!!!
Это просто шизгара ребятки!!!
Brilliant, just before its time. Will sell Zillions today
Crazy about this song! Love love love it!!!!
I played this over and over in the mid 70s as a young teenager with a crush on a “Helen”! Great song.
Hard Rock Abba!! Fantastic!!
Piano moog solo is almost likely funkie.
My favourite ABBA-song :)
I love my namesake song ❤
Chulada de canción..Poprock..TE Amo ABBA Desde Nuevo León.MEXICO.
Helen, who the f*** is Helen?!
So underrated, even by some fans.. so much rockier than some of the more bubblegum .. very good track, stands the test of time, so relevant to today !!
One of the lamest decisions of Benny and Bjork for the second Mamma Mia movie, was the boring song selections. They should have use much more smart songs like this one, "Move On", "Arrival", "Summer Night City", "On and On and On", "Watch Out", "Under Attack", "One Man, One Woman", etc, to approach the most artistic side of ABBA to a new public, instead of the super boring versions of "I've been waiting for you", "My love, My life" or the out of nowheres "When I Kissed the Teacher" and "Why Did It Have to be Me". Also, the repetition of several songs from the first movie gives more the idea that ABBA has no more songs. Benny and Bjork's picks this time were very lame and lazy.
Wow! Abba goes heavy metal! Cool!
I like the way the message of this song is ambiguous. It's neither approval nor censure; instead it's a question.
Rocking!
HeyHelenASMR
great song...
Sort a 70s version of Tommy Roe's "Hooray For Hazel."
One of abbas best songs ...

one of their more underrated songs...i still luv it
Essa banda era perfeita !
I grew up on ABBA, like most of us. This has always been my favourite ABBA song....❤️
A FANTASTIC SONG EVER! I THINK THE SAME US YOU DO TANJA, AND YOU TOO HELEN ANDERSON! WHY DIDN`T THIS SONG HEY HELEN, NEVER BEEN A HIT IN THE WHOLE WORLD? THIS SONG NEVER BEEN IN ALL THOOSE GREATEST HITS ALBUM OF ABBA EVER! WHY? I ALWAYS THINK THIS ALBUM WITH ABBA, ARE THE BEST OF ALL THOOSE ALBUMS, ABBA RECORDED IN 1972-1982! I LISTENING TOO THIS SONG TODAY, AT THE HELENA-DAY, 31 TH JULY 2018! I THINKING OF MY BIG SISTER LINDAS, LITTLE SISTER HELEN TODAY TOO!
my favorite Abba song
1:08 The backing vocals at the right channel sings "I Am Woman", if one hears it closely.
good catch.
i always suspected this song was a rebuke to the feminist ideal of having it all without a husband/father in the picture.
ТУЦ ТУЦТУЦТУТЦ
Benny rocks the clavinet.
Discovered abba via lush when I was a teenager. Mom was right about abba being good lol
who are lush?
Who are lush?
One of their very best songs.
I love this song. It's great after Mamma Mia on the album, though I honestly don't like "Tropical loveland" which comes after this song.
It's hardrock to me and glamrock to awesome.
Agnetha's epilogue high note on the refrain almost makes me orgasm. It caps it perfectly. Their compositions and executions were so masterful
Unbelievable sound and lyrics. One of the most talented and unique bands ever.
That's Swedes for you. Svenskar är frodiga.
They could wright great songs.
Lush brought me here.
A beautiful talented export from Sweden! Agnatha and Frida I had the biggest crush on these two beautiful Swedish singers. Their children equally talented as members of Ace of Base.
Swedish yes , but Frida was born in norway .
Umm...their children aren't in Ace of Base...
ABBA is a beautiful part of my youth. Love Agnatha and Frida. Now their children are in a band.
ABBA FOREVER !
ABBA rules! Period.
xoxo The Clarences
as a Helen I approve of this song! it's played many times in my life when I had to make a decision about my life!😄
Hey Helen. Glad you enjoy this song. One of my favs.
helen anderson same here . Cheers Another Helen .
I bet you like Van Halen too... (sound like Helen) tsk-tsk
einfach nur geil...
Incredible song. Catchy and irresistible... like most ABBA songs!
Heavy metal chords..
This was one of their best songs and I've never understood why it was never
released as a single here in the U.S.
It's a far better song than "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do", a single from the same album.
I think, unfortuntaly, that ABBA never got the recognition they deserved in the US. It may be because of the prejudices for non american-british music as top chart music that at least existed at that time.
It does not follow the feminist propaganda of the time.
Go listen to "I've Never Been To Me" by Charlene which was released in 1977, where it bombed, then again win 1982 when the problems of social engineering were becoming more obvious.
Also, read the responses the song got even today.
This was a b side too mamma Mia I think!!!
IMHO, "I Do" is vastly superior to this and, if the number of views is any indication, I am not alone. To each their own.
Great song from when I was a kid, love the deep bass and piano mix :)
Hey hey Helen (Reddy)
Love the power drums..
And the bass!
shakes you to the bone
So at last you're free
It's the way you wanted it to be
It's the price you pay
To be called a woman of todayIs it worth the pain to see the children cry?
Does it hurt when they ask for Daddy?Hey hey Helen
Now you live on your own
Hey hey Helen
Can you make it alone? So you're free at last
And are beginning to forget the past
Does it make you sad?
When you think about the life you've hadBut you're right, you had to take a second chance
So you fight, it's a fight for your freedomHey hey Helen
Now you live on your own
Hey hey Helen
Can you make it alone?Hey hey Helen, hey hey Helen
(What's the matter with you?)
Hey hey Helen, hey hey Helen
(Don't you know what to do?)Aah, yes you do, yes, you do
Aah, yes you do, yes, you doHey hey Helen
Now you live on your own
Hey hey Helen
Can you make it alone?Hey hey Helen, hey hey Helen
(What's the matter with you?)
Hey hey Helen, hey hey Helen
(Don't you know what to do?)
this song is 500% better if you listen to it while dancing or just moving around in some way. It has a special sort of energy that can only be captured when your blood is pumping fast.
Can confirm, Used to run to this.
Lush covered this song
Ah teenage memories getting lost in gala
ABBA version is better.
Rickvsnewworldorder yeah better produced definitely. Lush’s sounds like a demo but to a teenager in the 90s it was awesome lol
And what a great cover it is!
Who the fuck is Lush?
Just want to mention that Lush did a sparkling cover of this track. I can never decide which was best. Lush's version is less chunky, and more mellifluous - they smoothed out the rocky surface, and infilled the empty spaces with their trademark dayglo frothy jangle. Niiice!
You decide... and don't be afraid of the sacrilege!

Did they use "autotune" of any sort these days? If not... spot on whith clear voices. Beatiful work
+Xittin Anas "Wall of sound" production technique :)
+Xittin Anas no aototune on the original just pure talent!
This is way back before any autotune was known.. The girls were both trained sopranos.
Artists of the 70s had no use for autotune.
So-called artists of the 90s & 2000s, like Taylor (ain't that) Swift would perish without it.
@ Xittin Anas , No but the engineers used other tricks....wall of sound, choral harmonies, multi-layered tracks to make the voices sound fuller. Sounded better back then, whereas today the vocals sound totally synthetic on music recordings because usually the singers ( cough) dancers, can barely sing.. Agnetha and Frida came from solo careers before ABBA happened. Frida was a jazz singer. Agnetha was a ballad crooner like Barbra Streisand.. All of them had record deals long before ABBA was formed. Pretty sad what has happened to music really. I don't just say that because of my age. Today it isn't about the art or vocal talent, it's about who looks good, and can dance..Singing? The computer will take care of that.
Wonderful song!
Hey hey Helen :D
Do what?
Nothing today arrests me. No song, I mean. No song of today, I mean. Unless it's an old song. Like this rocking one. But this one is still unheard of today even though it's one of Abba's. And so-unheard-of that someone young today must surely take note of it in a supermarket aisle if, miraculously, somewhere in this world, this song would just occasionally puncture the usual torture that passes for pop music on a typical supermarket's ... er ... p..play...list (is that what you call it these days?). And if that is how someone young today discovers this song (in da supermarket), then surely that student or whomever would struggle for a few seconds straight after the end of the song in trying to remember the food item that he or she had just been searching for (such was the entirely different pleasant groove that had entered his or her being thanks to the song. This song!)
+Dustshoe I would love to hear this tune while shopping.
Dustshoe, You write well. :-) ....... And you are right!
@ Dustshoe , Because today's music is totally soulless and synthetic. It's sad
Proof that Bjorn is one UNDERRATED guitarist!
I don't know if that is Bjorn who is playing. Might be Rutger Gunnarsson.
@vern7424 Gunnarsson was playing bass i think Lasse Wellander or Janne Schaffer playing guitar in this
Really drives along with menace, one of the less cheesy Abba songs - they should have done more like this!
@User58747 this IS a great cheesy ABBA song!!!
But "The way old friends do, I have a dream" and "Arrival" are REALLY cheesy
no cheesy songs by ABBA...too high quality for that..
This songs of Sweden, so much. Everytime I hear it I think of summers in the south, eating langoustines and watching the sun that never sets. And want to go and visit once again.
It has changed so much that I barely recognize the big cities anymore. Heja Sverige !
I love rock voice of Frida.
tatjanaHD68 . That's the divine Agnetha Faltskog singing lead. Not Frida
@BroccoliQueefed No. In this song, Frida's voice prevails ;-)
<3 ;) I Like!!!!!
helen :D
What a great anti-feminist song by ABBA. There's a wonderful message here: when a woman tries to be independent and leaves her man, that's doesn't always turn out to be a good thing. "Is it worth, the pain to see the children cry, does it hurt, when they ask for Daddy?" Superb, not only melodically, but lyrically too. ABBA was way ahead of its time!
Look, we all have different interpretations of the song, and while we all have our own opinions, I consider myself to be a feminist, because the fundamental principles of feminism is that woman should have equal rights with men. Anyway, that's just my opinion and enough said. Let's just enjoy this wonderful song!
Anti-feminist?? A woman breaking away from a dead-end relationship, moving forward on her own? "Does it make you sad
When you think about the life you ha-ha-had
But you're right, you had to take a second chance
So you fight to find your freedom". Don't think you can guilt-trip European women to care about their children. The men don't really care; why should the women?!
Ancient post, I know...but seriously Rex, lighten up. Great song. Mind set reflective of the time; a time which is not inherently bad btw
VideoBash2 Unfortunately, feminism today is not about equality between the sexes. It’s about bashing men and focusing most if not all on the woman’s rights and privileges.
Bob Laubach No where in the song does it say she’s breaking away from a “dead-end relationship”! Instead, it’s saying she’s leaving a man with their children with her, and the children being distressed over it. ABBA are nobody’s fool. They wrote this song to highlight the wrongness of the situation. Not to celebrate it! It’s not rocket science to be able to see that. We should applaud ABBA for this great song.
reminds me a little of the velvet's "sweet jane"
I always liked this song. I don't understand it wasn't some of there more famous songs.
maybe they were afraid of being sued for a similar sounding tune released a year earlier by bachman turner overdrive. maybe this is why it was never pushed as a single
Its strange, isnt it..its a super great song, even with ABBAs all time high standard...
@ChasingTheStorm I agree with you but the"message" may not fit the popular narrative.
We have to be great at everything or else why even try?
It was the b side of Fernando, so it was a sleeper hit. Sold just as many copies as Fernando did
The problem Abba had (just like the Beatles) is that they had so much material but ther radios would allow them to pick an A side to play and the B side would be a filler. Both bands had so many excellent B sides, but had to release more pop sounds for the general audience
I had this album when it first came out, and besides the big hits on it (SOS & Mama Mia) this song absolutely blew me away! A lot heavier than anything I'd heard from them before, and they did it wonderfully!
It should have been a single from the album instead of the lame "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do".
Totally agree-- I had the album and think there was '45 of this too, either way, it's a hit the repeat and play over and over, love it!
Hey hey Helen was B-side of the 45 Mamma Mia (A side). I had it when I was a little girl in Greece in the late 70s!
that groovy instrumental break is killer!
What year was this song done?
It's from their 1975 album, ABBA.
It is because it's a B(l)ackstreet Bass... and it just reminds me to Back Street Crawler... a late 70s band
I just thought it was bass slapping ?
Oh, you might be right...
I think that's a clavinet, not a bass
such a brilliant song, definitly underated and unused, proper proper cool!! they defo dont and never will make em like this again!
I fucking love that bass 2:07
I fucking love that guitar
shut up coen teunisse
grandpas rocking love abba
my fav abba song!!
No, they are saying she had too take the second chance and leave him
This song is beyond great! Wow!
The lyrics confuse me. It sounds like they are putting this woman down for leaving a bad marriage.
Looking at the album cover I'll bet the members were thinking, "We're making millions on album sales, can't we afford a minivan or something with a little more room?"
douglas787 . They're not thinking that at all because they are in a stretch limousine
Nice Song!!
In my car stereo ever :)
@absolutelyfree1963 they are still hot now!!
So much great.. One of their best Songs...
