Aaron Neville - Over You Lyrics

There'll be some slow walkin'
Gonna be some sad talkin'
There'll be some flowers bringin'
Gonna be some sad singin'
Over you, I say over you
Over you, pretty baby
If I ever hear you say we're through

There'll be some long black limousines
People peepin' from their window screens
Parade of cars with their headlights on
All of that will be goin' on
Over you, I said over you
Over you, pretty baby
If I ever hear you say we're through

There'll be a hole about six feet deep
For you baby to take your sleep
Into a pine box an' down you'll go
Where you will stay where it's free of snow
Over you, I said over you
Over you, pretty baby

If I ever hear you say we're through
All your folks will be dressed in black
Ride a long black cadillac
Yeah, baby they'll be puttin' you away
The funeral home'll have the business that day
Over you, I said over you
Over you, pretty baby
If I ever hear you say we're through

Say I want to slay you baby, whoa now
Over you, pretty baby
If I ever hear you say we're through

Say you'll never leave me
I say you'll never leave me
Say I'm gonna get rid of you , baby
If I ever hear you say we're through

Whoa, I love you
No tellin' what I'd do
That's why baby
I want to do all these things to you

this song went to #21 on the R&B charts in 1960!!!

  3. 6.... ....

One of my favorite songs back in 1960. I was 15. Like you Steve I listened to KDIA in San Francisco/Oakland. Also, KYA and KEWB. Yeah, "Over You" had good sized play on the West Coast.

    6.... ....

Welcome. Is there a story about your user name....

    6.... ....

@Steve, A 1961 Dodge Lancer was the first car I owned. It had a slant - 6 engine and a 3 speed transmission on the floor. It was a nice little car. Where did you live in the bay area Steve?

    6.... ....

@61dodgelancer I lived in San Pablo, up near "Tank Farm Hill", but once I was driving I would drive to Oakland and San Leandro where my friends lived. Have you heard my Rosko (dj) tape here on You Tube?

Played out in the news today as Austin Rollins kills his girlfriend Jaelynn Willey and dies himself.

Don James That is so sad. Nothing to do with this record tho.

  11. d.... ....

One I didn't know had been written by Allen Toussaint until I saw him play it at Jazz Fest several years ago!

    +dancinfool2006 Cool..

For people who are bewildered by the lyrics, revisiting the era when this song was out could be helpful. This song was popular during a period before the women's liberation movement. Women had not come into their own identity. Generally, people accepted the idea that a man could seek revenge upon a woman who left him, especially if he had a job. Back then, women still lingered to the 100-year tradition that women were not to pursue secular careers; they were expected to reproduce, take care of the home, and raise children Women were expected to marry so that a man could take care of her, and if she had a man taking care of her, she was expected to do everything within her power to demonstrate her gratefulness. Leaving, for any reason, was considered highly ungrateful-- just think how many women would die to be in her very place. Hence, from the perspective of the people back then, for a woman to walk away from a perfect situation, as they perceived it, no amount of explaining could exonerate a thankless hag. She could never have a valid reason for leaving. He works; she's at home; he takes cares of her. What trifle could she not endure? Thus, although people may not have agreed to killing a woman, many probably felt they understood how a man could kill a no good hag who probably deserved it. During that time it was still very legal in many states for a man to beat his wife if he deemed it necessary. .

    C.... ....

    "Pistol Pack'n Mama" not withstanding!

    C.... ....

CheckMate657879 You took all that space and time to say something that imo is irrelevant to this particular song. Your treatise applies to possibly your culture. The people (women) you are speaking of have probaby never listened to this song. The culture that produced this song and it's major audience did not have the luxury of staying at home and being taken care of.

  13. D.... R....

THIS IS THE NEW ORLEANS SOUND JUST LIKE THE MOWTOWN SOUND DENNY R MAN

    D.... R....

+DENNY R MAN Many people think the lyrics are too morbid, especially for '60

    D.... R....

this was a very big hit in new orleans in the 60's but NEW ORLEANS IS A LITTLE MORBID PLENTY VOO DOO AND WITCHCRAFT

    D.... R....

It was a hit outside of New Orleans

  14. N.... R....

So is he saying that he is going to catch a body

  15. D.... T....

    BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    D.... T....

    +Dave Thomas Thanks for visiting...

    D.... T....

Thanks for those Mediterranean chicken salads

  16. s.... ....

Lighten UP! Maybe this was all written "tongue in cheek"! It's co-written by Allen Toussaint who I don't think anyone would ever take his songwriting as mean-spirited. I'm from N.O. and truly believe it wasn't intended to be taken as seriously as this current PC world is taking it!! ~Geez~

  17. D.... ....

I bought this in 1962 - Oakland, CA...still have it.

    D.... ....

Douglas Urantia Oakland, Ca is where I first heard it. Actually Oakland is where I first did everything

  18. B.... L....

this song is very close to stick and stones by ray charles

  19. C.... ....

"Say, I'm gonna slay you, baby ... I said you'll never leave me ... I'm gonna get rid of you, baby if I ever hear you say we're through."  So, that's what people mean when they say, "I love you death."

  20. L.... C....

Pretty terrifying lyrics, but a great song nonetheless.

    L.... C....

Yeah, that ought to come with a Parental Advisory sticker on it or something. Maybe that's why Biggie Smalls lifted some of these lyrics.

  21. S.... ....

I remember and love this song, but haven't been able to find it anywhere.  Thanks for posting!  Maybe since there's a discrepancy here someone could contact Aaron and ask him to clarify!

    S.... ....

You bet.  I've had mine for 55 years!

  22. r.... s....

    it's aaron  alright,no boubt

    r.... s....

Are you drinking again, Robert?  ;)

  23. J.... C....

his vocal phrasing is so HIP!!! He sings it like a drummer whippin'
    a beat on you….

  24. s.... ....

@ Sandra Thompson: Ahh NO, This is Aaron Neville. I don't know from where you got your info, but you are badly mistaken. There are very few jams if any where Artie sings lead. I'm from New Orleans, and I KNOW what um talkin' 'bout: Sooo get hip and check your facts. And where are YOU from?? It seems that you have read a review about Allen and Artie and their music, but you need to wise up!!

    s.... ....

Silverback's right... this is clearly Aaron. But Art DID sing lead on a couple, back in the day. "Cha Dooky Do", "All These Things" were two of 'em, but there were others.

  25. D.... W....

Sorry Sandra Thompson. This Is Aaron singing. I know that for a fact. I played on a couple of dates

  26. R.... ....

And what would you call KEWB..?

  27. S.... ....

At 15 I wasn't very into lyrics...it was the ryhthm and soul I wanted.

  28. S.... ....

That's not call letters, it's some kind of jelly :)

  29. s.... ....

    Yay bud...hoid it on KYA.

    s.... ....

    + KDIA & KSOL

  30. c.... ....

    nice one for this

  31. c.... ....

    nice on for this

  32. D.... L....

    That is Aaron singing!

  33. l.... ....

I recalled this song from my childhood. It took me nearly 50 years to find out who sang it. I was overjoyed when I was able to lay my hands on a copy of it. Not the nicest of songs, but left an impression on me as a 9 year old that made me want to hear it again.

  34. J.... C....

No way this song would ever get airplay today. Even though hip-hoppers can say F---and Ho all day long. This song is all about hurting women.

  35. S.... ....

Good point. I wish Aaron could/would answer this question. I did admit I could be wrong ;-) Have a good day.

  36. S.... ....

I dont see how one can base a voice judgement based on over FIFTY years ago. As to whether it's Aaron, I ask the originator why on Earth would Art sing it and put Aaron on the credits?

  37. S.... ....

This is news to me as I always thought this was Aaron, too. I first heard the song in Chicago in the '60s and loved it but was never able to find a recording in later years. Now that I really listen to it and after hearing Aaron sing on TV this morning I believe Aaron's voice is a little higher OR maybe I'm wrong altogether ;-)

  38. j.... f....

saw him at Long Beach Audit. when I was in the Navy 1960---He Was Great even Then--GREAT SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  39. s.... ....

This is a "test" song--by some miracle it comes over the radio when a person or people, male or female or whatever are in the mix, & I surreptitiously glance around to see what effect if any this aural monster has. Now if the folks just go on about their yakking away or chowing down and take no notice of the kickin' ass tune I immediately, irrevocably consign said individual/s to the dustbin as far as sympatico folks go. Yeah, a very good test. Surprising how many flunk, but that's the way....

  40. M.... ....

What separates this from "Teen Angel" or "Last Kiss" is that the singer is threatening to kill his baby himself! Listen to the end. Of course, it's "good-natured" as in Arthur Crudup/Elvis' "Baby Let's Play House" with its line, "Id rather see you dead, little girl/Than to be with another man", which J Lennon borrowed for "Run For Your Life".....

  41. C.... ....

The great songwriter Allen Toussaint was half responsible for this song. He wrote or co-wrote these major hits,Southern Nights, Mother-In-Law, Working In The Coal Mine, Fortune Teller and even the Al Hirt instrumental hit Java. In 1998 Allen Toussaint was inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

    C.... ....

Allen was the house piano man at my uncle Joe Banashak's Minit (Later Instant) record studio.

  42. C.... ....

srercrcr - Those 78's you must have purchased at two different times. Bue Suede Shoes was available in early 1956. Peggy Sue by Buddy Holly was not available to purchase until late summer 1957. Two great records I also bought on 78rpm. Along with three great hits by The Platters, Only You, The Great Pretender and (You've Got) The Magic Touch. Was there ever a better lead singer than the late Tony Williams? I don't think so.

  43. S.... ....

    @boomwaddis Hahaaaaa

  44. b.... ....

Whoever wrote this song got some ISSUES.

  45. N.... ....

@srercrcr Yeah, some what, a lot of songs from that time had a happier more uptempo sound, but the lyrics told dark stories of loss, heartbreak, loneliness and so on. Only thing is that Teen Angel is a sad song all around, I think the titles for those songs should be swapped.

  46. S.... ....

@Nostranamus811 For example..DEATH OF AN ANGEL and was it TEEN ANGEL?

  47. N.... ....

@radgeek01 It is dark for the time but a lot of his songs had dark lyrics.

  48. c.... ....

You must be from the SF/Oakland Bay Area. I remember this song from then, too. My brother used to listen to KDIA and KSAN. Love to hear more of your records.

  49. S.... S....

This is hands down my favorite Aaron Neville song. now i'm homesick.

  50. 6.... ....

@radgeek01 , You're right. Dark lyrics. Remember "Mack the Knife" and the Beatle's "Run for Your Life". I remember loving these songs too and then listening to the lyrics and going...."Katy Bar the Door"! Great songs but like you say, dark lyrics. I may be wrong but I seem to remember "Mack the Knife" being banned in some cities like Chicago from being played on the radio. Anybody else remember?

  51. S.... P....

some of the original 78's actually had great sound quality.i still have my first LP "Lonely & Blue"by roy.

  52. C.... ....

Oh my goodness! I had forgotten all about this song. This was one of my jams. Then, Aaron went kind of country western later on. In fact, it was difficult to connect the later Aaron Neville with this Aaron Neville. LOL! Thanks for this upload, Srecrcr.

  53. S.... ....

@flomurdock I've had other singles by him in those early years that were spelled AA, so it looks like somebody at the record company just didn't know how to spell Aaron. We should ask him!

  54. f.... ....

Interesting point about the mis-spelling. I've often wondered if that's the way his name is really spelled, and he just spells it the usual way not to confuse people. Seems to me one of his tattoos says ARRON

  55. f.... ....

@srercrcr That's an understatement at best! I heard this a lot on WLAC at the time, and just loved it. Then never heard it again for years until I found a copy in the 70s. I almost fainted dead away at the lyrics. If you can get past the lyrics, it's still the quintessential New Orleans R&B record - all the parts are there.

  56. S.... ....

@radgeek01 Interesting point, It never occured to me before.

  57. r.... ....

Great song. The lyrics seem rather dark for 1960.

  58. P.... ....

Ohh man, check them out. I don't think the Benny Spellman tune is up but I've seen the other two posted

  59. S.... ....

Thx. Haven't heard those. All I can think of at 2 am is Ooh Poo Pa Doo..Jesse Hill I think. Good sized hit.

  60. P.... ....

Fantastic song. Minit Record put out a lot of great stuff, and their earlier releases are really hard to find. I'm still looking for a copy of this, Wrong Number by Aaron Neville, Moanin' and Screamin by Diamond Joe and Life Is Too Short by Benny Spellman.
