5th Dimension, The - Workin' On A Groovy Thing Lyrics

When I saw you I knew that
I was gonna love you
And everyday I thought
Of how I'm gonna love you

Now you're here next to me
And ecstasy is a reality
I feel good when you are near
I'm alive 'cause you are here

Workin' on a groovy thing, baby
Workin' on a groovy thing
Workin' on a groovy thing, baby
Let's not rush in, we'll take it slow

Before I met you I knew my lips
Were only wasted
'Cause you have got the sweetest kiss
I ever tasted

Music moves us along
Your arms around me are snug and warm
Happiness is in my soul
I'm about to lose all control

Workin' on a groovy thing, baby
Workin' on a groovy thing
Workin' on a groovy thing, baby
Let's not rush in, we'll take it slow

Now you're here next to me
And ecstasy is a reality
I feel good when you are near
I'm alive 'cause you are here

And we're workin' on a groovy thing, baby
Workin' on a groovy thing
Workin' on a groovy thing, baby
Let's not rush in, we'll take it slow

Workin' on a groovy thing, baby
Workin' on a groovy thing

5th Dimension, The Workin' On A Groovy Thing Comments
  1. d.... m....

I like Patti Drew's version better!

  2. M.... S....

An upbeat happy perfect time piece. So smooth with a great finish. Makes me sad that this was 50 years ago.

  3. S.... W....

Could this been the most successful black group from the 60’s that tried to sound white? I mean I think the Supremes come in at a close second. But these black guys took trying to sound white to a whole new level. The polar opposite of white groups that tried to sound black like The Rascals and the Righteous Brothers and Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels. Still superb productions and arrangements with instrumental backing by the Wrecking Crew and producing and engineering by Bones Howe.

  4. J.... W....

The Fifth Dimension was a great group of extraordinarily talented people, excellent singers, and nothing but class. Beautiful song!😊💒

  5. S.... K....

I liked this version. I liked Patti Drew's version better though because it was more soulful, and a great slow dance record with the lights down low :)

  6. G.... W....

    Production team was wonderful also

  7. T.... M....

The 5th Dimension was way better when they were harmonizing through most of their tunes. That's why their earlier songs were so good.

  8. G.... G....

hi sounds great from summer of 1969 swimming by the pool with all day music too I love it

  9. S.... G....

To me Marilyn is hot for her age still looks good for her age

  10. S.... G....

Marilyn McCoo and husband Billy Davis Jr. Went solo in early 1977 with You Don't have to be a star to be in my show remember that song

  11. S.... G....

The Fifth Dimension are the best soul group especially the finest ladies Marilyn McCool and Florence LaRue I think Marilyn is one hot babe from then to now so is Florence LaRue sexy and beautiful to them well Mr.Billy Davis Jr. I praise you my brother still married to Marilyn McCoo after almost 50 years of marriage if it wasn't for you I be next in line to marry a woman like that who could sing and dance her hips off

  12. b.... p....

    Working

  13. A.... S....

One of my favorite groups The 5th Dimension bubblegum Rock

  14. J.... M....

great band from the hippie days!

  15. H.... E....

"Fabulous Music" late 60s thru 70s Great Memories👌💙👏👏👏👏

  16. s.... ....

Marilyn McCoo defined cool classiness. A helluva singer and performer and terrific female role model to this day. Beautiful in so many ways!

    s.... ....

    Cool classiness!!

  17. B.... M....

I spent hours in 1969 holding this album and staring at this group's pictures and listening to these songs over & over.

  18. f.... ....

    Exquisite

  19. s.... b....

    🐈*wink" *smile*

  20. C.... D....

    Just soooo cool! DC 1969.

  21. n.... ....

    Fantastic! Just Fantastic!!

  22. W.... M....

I tell you, I really miss music like this, it takes me back, it sure takes me back!!!!

  23. M.... S....

It does not get better than this.

  24. S.... B....

Top twenty hit from the summer of 1969-Great song that was written by Neil Sedaka.

  25. s.... l....

Never again will there be music like this.

    s.... l....

    Great great song

    s.... l....

Still one of my favorites, even after all these years. The 5th Dimension was one of the groups that really were a classic group, in every sense of the word. Five years of hits were FAR too few!!!

    s.... l....

@Robert Hetrick Neil Sedaka & Atkins

    s.... l....

    It's a shame but true.

    s.... l....

It will always be here, it's on tape, vinyl, the internet. It's not going away

  26. s.... l....

How the hell do we go from this to Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, lil Wayne?

    s.... l....

    Hell if I know, Steve.

    s.... l....

I haven't listened to regular radio in 25 years now. I'm 63, and this was one of my favourite songs when it was on the charts. I don't think I would have believed anyone if they had told me then that music in 2017 would be so awful.

    s.... l....

Music is so nasty and gross now-- not pleasant at all to listen to--and I don't.

    s.... l....

To be fair, that's 2 different genres you're comparing.

  27. J.... O....

I Believe Neil Sedaka wrote this for them. I thought I heard that long ago.

    J.... O....

Yes he did. Neal wrote for a lot of artists,

  28. B.... M....

OMG I forgot this song along with so many greats from the era. Excellent post! Raspberries to the 8 people who thumbs downed this classic. Thanks for the memories :D

  29. N.... S....

More California magic from the 5th D. Didn't know that this was written by the great Sedaka; mskes since though; when a classy act blows up worldwide as Marilyn McCoo and company did, the act gets bombarded with great, great material.

The Fifrh Dimension's sound was a soothing counterpoint to a tremendously roiling late '60s - early '70s here in the US.

Talented singers, with the best pop / adult contemporary songs, played by the best pop session men in the world: pure heaven for a teen top 40 /R&B addict such as myself, back then.

    N.... S....

That would be: " ... makes sense, though ... " lol

  30. M.... D....

This is true groovness...it's Mo groovy

  31. h.... ....

This is good but check out Neil Sedaka's original. On another level.

    h.... ....

the original is by Patti Drew on Capitol from 1968. Neil's own version came in 1969.

    h.... ....

And between Patti Drew and th Fifth Dimension is a choice of what mood you're in. Neil Sedaka don't figure in the conversation.

    h.... ....

This is the best version !

  32. D.... A....

    I love this song.

  33. J.... S....

"Music moves us along." How true!

  34. D.... J....

Every Fifth Dimension song brings me back to 1969 when I would come home from school and my babysitter usually had them playing on the record player. I miss this music SO much!!!

  35. C.... V....

They didn't just take the music, they took the class with them! No twerking, butt out, grabbing crouches... just good music sung by classy people. Miss that... Well, if the producers will just give the India Arie's, Jill Scott's, etc. a chance we'd have it back....

    C.... V....

So right you are; real talent; great era for music

    C.... V....

I totally agree. Neil Sedaka wrote this great song. Summer 1969 remember it very well

    C.... V....

@Robert Hetrick No frills, no nonsense, no theatrics, no big butts, just great music

Vt gov shumlin is Robin Hood in reverse, steals from the poor to feed himself -the multi millionaire. WHY DID NOT THE FEDS INDICTMENT HIM FOR CONSPIRACY?

    M.... P....

+Mercuryhg Poisoned, I'm sorry for your troubles, but what does this have to do with this song?

  39. M.... M....

    Thnaks.

  40. G.... M....

Used to listen to this up at Camp Eagle in I Corps.  Tech Supply Platoon.  801st Maint  BN.  HQ & A Co.  Lots of water under the bridge since those days.

  41. J.... E....

THANK YOU NEAL SEDAKA FOR WRITING THAT TUNE!!

    J.... E....

He wrote some great songs in that era another one was for The Fifth Dimension and Tom Jones Puppet Man. 7071 don't hide Your Love Cher 1972. And Davy Jones is only solo hit. Rainy Jane 1971.
And of course this beautiful tune. Also the singer-songwriter Gary DeCarlo who was the writer and lead singer of the group Steam na na hey hey kiss him goodbye.
Did a nice cover this song as well give it a listen

  42. J.... E....

THIS ONE GROUP OF THE NICEST PEOPLE YOU EVER WANT TO MEET....GOD REST MR. TOWNSEND..I HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING THE 5th.DIMENSION IN LA YEARS AGO....GOD, WERE THEY SO NICE TO ME.. I MENTIONED TO THEM AT THE TIME  I STAY IN TOUCH WITH THEIR DRUMMER HAL BLAINE....THE LOVED THAT...THANKS SO MUCH FOR POSTING....I LOVE THIS GROUP..

    J.... E....

I've been a 5th Dimension fan ever since they came on the scene. I, too, had the pleasure of meeting them on multiple occasions and agree that they are some of "the nicest people you ever want to meet." Sometimes, when I reflect on the times we met, I can't believe they were so personable. Needless to say, I have nothing but fond memories of all the members. Class with a capital "C." They and their beautiful music will always occupy a special place in my heart.

  43. e.... ....

Thank you kodeblak for posting this great song. Have not heard this in years. The harmony of their voices is beautiful.

  44. S.... C....

LOVE IT..DIG IT..GREAT MEMORIES PAST AND PRESENT..WORKIN ON THAT GROOVY THING😊

    S.... C....

Life itself in the sixties was a groovy thing. I would do it again in a heartbeat. The good Times were great and even the bad times were made bearable by songs like this

  45. J.... O....

I find out several years ago when I first heard this song that Neil Sedaka wrote it for them. I think its their best song even though it was not a big hit for them. It's light and cheery.

    J.... O....

I wasn't aware that it wasn't a very big hit for them.  I remember when I was little, and I listened to the radio ALL the time, I had a radio attached to my hand at all times, the city I lived in played this song a lot, so, although it might not have been a big hit for them, it was a big hit for them where I lived.  One of my "never get tired/sick of" songs.

    J.... O....

@ProudKansan08 It was. She doesn't know what she's talking about! It did well on the charts also!

    J.... O....

    +kelamo :)

    J.... O....

Sedaka did not write the song for them. Patti Drew had a regional hit with the song a year before this version, in 1968.

    J.... O....

yes but atkins was in on it with sedaka..but not he didnt have the 5th dimension on his mind for the tune ...lol who knows great songs like this get written while sitting on the shitter and written on a klenex box lmao.

  46. t.... h....

i loved in 69 and now

    t.... h....

So did I. I had all of their albums, and when they came out on CD, I bought them all over again.

    t.... h....

69 had some of the best music.
I think the years from about.
67 to 73 Maybe tons great music. Still a lot of great music after 73 and today but it was starting to get selective.

  47. 0.... ....

    SUPER!  SUPER!   AWESOME!     TUNE!

  48. J.... S....

Great song, haven't heard it in ages.

  53. s.... ....

I'm 'only' 40 but I enjoy listening to the music of this era. Whatever happened to real heart and soul music, that actually meant something?

  54. M.... S....

workin' on grooves & takin it slow

  55. J.... T....

One of my fave 5th Dimension songs.......... seldom played on oldies radio..

  56. G.... L....

The Fifth Dimension - one great song after another. I loved them all, but we do have our favorites - this is one of mine. They were amazingly talented, a fantastic group. Thank you for this post.

  57. h.... ....

tmmmviii, yours is such a great comment.

  58. N.... F....

    brilliant marylyn mc coo singing!

  59. h.... ....

They sound so incredible when they boom their voices all together. M.McCoo's deep, full-bodied, thick, sensuous voice is so charmingly fantastic and pleasant to the ears - to the heart, mind and soul. She has such a wonderful voice. There's an intelligence that is present in her voice, too - it makes it such a fascinating experience to listen to her sing.

  60. g.... g....

Wish I could go back to this fabulous time, when this music was it, Thank god , I was there, and you people who remember do too!!!!

  61. k.... ....

I distinctly remember the cover of this album as a kid! I couldn't remember the name of this song at first.

  62. T.... ....

    Nice tune kodie :)

  63. b.... ....

Great harmony and you can understand the words!!!

  64. J.... L....

Solid, sexy and timeless, even if you don't watch the performance. A big one for me back in '69! Like to go back to those days for a day or two...

  65. M.... S....

    Sooooo sexy!!!!!!!!

  66. M.... T....

Brings back memories of the beach and a transistor radio.

  67. r.... ....

    Fabulous!!-- All I can say!

  68. B.... ....

I will end up diabetic listening to this song.

  69. r.... ....

Ahhh, memories of summers in the late '60's just having fun and not worying about mortages or government deficits!

  70. P.... ....

@oldschoolwhitegirl, mine, too. On my list of "NEVER GET TIRED OF SONGS".

  71. D.... B....

I'm just wondering where are artists like this today? This was real music I cherished back in the day. Real musicians that could actually sing. Harmonies....beautifully written songs about pleasant topics. I can't think of another group that's doin' this today. The Spinners.....Stylistics.....and of course 5th Dimension. I guess if the artist isn't wearing pink hair, dressing like a total hoe, or dating Kim Kardashian or Paris Hilton the kids just aren't interested. It''s their loss.

  72. B.... A....

    Happiest song !!

  73. t.... ....

    Thanks for posting this.

    This performance is somewhat staggering.

  74. l.... ....

makes me feel good allllll over! All these years later and I still feel good alllll over! Classic.

  75. t.... ....

Love this song so much, one of their greatest!

  76. L.... G....

    Excellent.*****

  77. t.... ....

    @utubemusiccritic Me too!

  78. J.... S....

This song makes me feel better than any medicine i've ever taken!
