I have posted elsewhere over the years... Jimmy Webb is one of my all time favorite songwriters and a big influence to me as someone who started the piano at 3 and has listened to virtually to most songs that have charted since 1963 ( I was born in 1969)... The orchestration and arrangement combined with the perfect blend of the 5th Dimensions voices truly goes down in my book as one of the best produced pop hits of the modern rock era.... This song earned and deserved it's Grammy Award in spades.

My small memory of this song back in 1967, our class in the Bronx went out on a school trip. Coming home all we kids had balloons. On the bus trip back one kid was singing "Up, up and away" into his balloon and then it popped right in his face. The entire school bus busted up in laughter. What times.

Music charts are not that important they are basically paid advertisements from the record companies , it has always been a scam and still is. I was around when this record came out and it got tons of radio airplay throughout the 60's and 70's in the US and globally compared to other hits and radio airplay is a true barometer of what the people like. Yes , it is true that the radio promotion is play for pay but it's different just putting numbers on billiboard charts. If the people don't like the song on the radio they won't play it.
