5th Dimension, The - This Is Your Life Lyrics

This is your life you're living
And it's the only one you've got
It's your life you're giving
Don't you think it's time you asked yourself for what?

This is your life, not a game that you play
It's your life and you're throwing it away
You're a runaround
The worst one in our end of town
And everyone knows that I still love you so

That precious wine you're tasting will be bitter when you're done
It's your life you're wasting
Don't you think it's sad you had to start so young?

This is your life, not a merry-go-round
It's your life, boy, and you can't live it down
You're a runaround
The worst one in our end of town
Yes, everyone knows that I still love you so

This is your life
Not just something to do
This is your life
And it's my life, too

This is your life
I know it's your life
I'm saying, don't throw it away
This is your life but it's my life too
This is your life
They say you're a runaround
I know it's your life but it's my life too

  1. T.... S....

    A hidden gem.
Golden voice ... controlled and in harmony.

  2. G.... D....

This song is for the beautiful Diahann Carroll RIP!!!

  3. f.... h....

This song deserved to be a huge hit. Infectious and impeccable.

  4. T.... T....

Florence seems to be overlooked because of Marilyn’s beauty and voice but she has a lovely voice as we can all hear and she was very attractive as well. She also had an amazing 6 pack abs. She sang lead on Love Hangover, a really strong performance.

  5. p.... ....

What a fabulous group they were.

  6. K.... M....

The best! I wish they as a group were still around performing! Our loss! Thank God for. My LPs and Utube!

  7. b.... ....

    LOVE YOU.... Miss Florence. XXOO

  8. T.... R....

    Soaring, commanding, utterly majestic.

  9. k.... C....

I can see shades of the great opera singer, Renee Fleming in the timbre of Florence's voice - Renee started her career as a jazz singer - the ending of the record ending of the Jimmy Webb song is sublime!

  10. J.... J....

Just another beautiful song by The 5th Dimension a super talented super group that was underrated even with all their Grammys wish they were still around voice text

OMG beautiful voice and a very BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. THANK YOU FOR THIS SONG!!!!!!!

  20. T.... L....

I've always liked them, but Florence's singing falsetto is just awful.

    T.... L....

You know nothing about good singing and this top quality

  21. G.... D....

They were so classy!!! The Sylvers reminded me of them!!! Florence LaRue...I love you girl!!!! I love Marilyn I love you too!!! Such wonderful harmony!!!

  22. I.... G....

I miss this kind of singing

  23. A.... S....

I was 9 years old when that album came out. I'll be 56 next month... geez. how time goes by. that is one if my all time favorites sung by one who never got the full recognition her voice deserved. BTW, I still have my original album from when I got it in 1971!

  24. J.... M....

This is a classic song I would never forget. Beautifully done by this artist, Thank you.

  25. a.... ....

Wow! Florence can sing! She could have led her own group with much success. She sounds as sweet and beautiful as se looks.

  26. B.... G....

    wow shes good too...

  27. G.... D....

    Florence you sung it girl

  28. K.... A....

Ironically, my two favorite songs by the Fifth Dimension, with all of their smashes, is this song and the Sailboat Song, sung by Ronald Townson.

  29. p.... ....

Oh man do I miss this music.

  30. R.... C....

    Yeah Florence, Sing girl.

  31. s.... ....

I dedicate this song to my beloved "Cousin-Sister" Miss Gail Roberta Ellis who introduced me to this song in the summer of '72 who passed away 16 June 2016 from breast cancer. This song is you Gail. I thought Billy Paul's version was the best until I heard Florence LaRue & the wonderful voices of The 5th Dimension sing This Is Your Life. Many fond memories of hours spent together partying in the NE Washington,D.C. & Glenarden, MD.of our youth Gail. The "Crew of '72" were 15 strong & now we're 14. The world is a little bit better because of you Gail & a lot sadder with your passing. Rest well my beautiful cousin & go with God. The crew will circle up the wagons & soldier on missing you in the process. You did not throw your life away though, you lived it to the fullest. You are gone but never forgotten. "Death leaves a heartache no one can heal; love leaves a memory no one can steal". I love & miss "U". Vaya con Dios mi amor.

  32. c.... r....

    TRULY EPIC!!!!

  33. G.... D....

Why does this group reminds me of the Sylvers!

  34. T.... F....

    Awesome!

  35. J.... ....

    Whew....amazing

  36. p.... ....

    Beautiful music survives.

    p.... ....

+Portable Joe I listened to 5th Dimension as a little kid in the 70s, my mom had their albums. And every now and then one of their songs starts playing in my head like today. I had to come home and search for this song, which was one of my favs. Such beautiful music back then, and no one had even heard of auto-tune. You either had a voice or you didn't get a contract.

  37. D.... J....

Someone in Brooklyn just used this song on wax to create a pretty chill beat.

  38. s.... ....

I can go forever not hearing music from the 5th Dimension and then tune back in. Suddenly, I am overcome by goosebumps or tears. It never fails.

    s.... ....

Sally,I feel the same way. What a dynamite group.

    s.... ....

I SO hear you, sister Sally Ann Dahl. The best and greatest music has exactly that ability... to reach deep into your soul.. and break you down.. confirming that you're TRULY alive.

  39. j.... ....

This is a classic and it will never ever go out of style,!!!

  40. D.... d....

No matter who sang lead, even if no one sang lead, the 5th's commercial primacy, record after record from 1967 to 1973, made it the best time to be a teenager.

  41. K.... A....

I was, and am still in love with Florence La Rue. Beautiful voice and she was and is gorgeous.

    K.... A....

It was the lips bruh. Damn she is FINE!!!!

  42. M.... W....

And THIS is why I stopped listening to what passes for music today........

  43. k.... ....

I was only a kid, but I had a crush on Florence and Marilyn.

    k.... ....

    karajokoo
I was just a kid too, and had a crush on the big guy. he was just always so freaking cool and had a goatee that was just life! lolol

  44. P.... H....

This song, "This is your life" was so beautifully done!!!

  45. K.... B....

    Their vocal excellence was outstanding.

  46. m.... ....

    Beautiful.

  47. t.... ....

Florence LaRue has a beautiful voice.  She and Marylin McCoo has a way of making everything they sing sound elegant and classy.  But I have to admit I like Eleanor Mills version of this song better.  But both are nice.

  48. G.... D....

classic song of the 5th dimension, awesome performance, one of the best songs of the group

  49. s.... ....

    This is a classic!

  50. c.... ....

Great vocal by Florence and Marilyn's high notes in the backups too.

  51. C.... t....

    Awesome! !!

  52. w.... ....

I Love You Florence. Great song.

  53. s.... v....

I remember myself and my sister Laurie listening to this song over and over again, the way Florence sings this song, it brings tears to my eyes...

  54. S.... ....

Absolutely correct! Their voices blended so beautifully. I love to listen to their albums because each time I marvel at how they harmonized. I saw them in 1970 and again this past week (Aug 22 2013). Florence is now the remaining original member, and they put on a good show. Perhaps, a bit too many solos and not enough group singing, but that's the way it is. If only they could have stayed together and had more hits. We lost a great group when they broke up.

  55. S.... ....

    Absolutely!!

  56. S.... ....

What a beautiful song. I'd forgotten about this one, so I'm glad to re-discover it. I saw Florence & the 5th Dimension this week (Aug 22 2013), and she still sounds as wonderful as ever. Florence is doing her best to keep the music alive, and the crowd loved the show. I'm so glad I had the chance to hear her again. Thanks for posting this.

  57. E.... N....

ahhh.....one of my kind of songs!

  58. M.... ....

I have always loved the 5th Dimension and years later I learned that many of their songs (including This is Your Life) were written by my favorite songwriter, Jimmy Webb. He also wrote Up, Up and Away, their first (and his) hit.

  59. D.... N....

Now I know I'm really old. I clicked on this thinking it might be a segment of the This Is Your Life TV show featuring The Fifth Dimension. The show was on originally before The Fifth Dimension appeared on the scene, but there was a revival of the show in the 1970s.

  60. L.... S....

    I love them..that is all

  61. s.... ....

Fantastic like being under a vocal spell! They do not make this kind of music anymore !RIP Ron Townson!

  62. M.... ....

There seems to be a mix up on who recorded the later version of this song with Norman Conners....the vocalist on that version is Eleanor Mills...not Jean Carn.

    M.... ....

+MsTexas73 You know black people aren't the only ones that have soul, The Bee gees were a R&B band, Disco was a made up name for Dance Music of the day !

  63. B.... B....

Just listen to that unbelievable bass of Joe Osborne! He always throws in some amazing lick at the end of a tune. His style is unmistakable to those familiar with him.

  64. g.... r....

i wish they would've stayed together longer and had florence leading more songs, i think they could have been on a level of manhattan tranfer or new york voices, they certainly had the talent

  65. l.... k....

    Timeless and beyond words.

  66. M.... ....

@thunder19581 That's Marilyn hitting the high notes in the background while Florence is singing lead vocals.

  67. w.... ....

Thanx for adding this. Takes me back to my youth, and a time when not too many black folx were digging the 5th. Love Florence (the unsung voice of the group). This whole album was excellent. Great choice.

  68. d.... ....

My sis and i use to rewind the cassette over and over again.Just to enjoy this beautiful song.No stress

    d.... ....

dundeebebe that's how I learned all of their songs

  69. T.... ....

Poor Florence shewing all us fawning, dreaming white guys away.

  70. D.... W....

that's Florence hitting the high notes

  71. D.... W....

Florence was just as equally talented as Marilyn, if you listen to all of their music, many times one cannot tell who is leading......the voices harmonized SO perfectly. There has never been a group as fully talented as the Fifth Dimension.......and never will be. Too bad there had to be an end of their era.

  72. M.... ....

@casey3234 I agree. I think that instead of people saying one version is better than another...they should just admit they prefer the "soul' versions. I like all the versions of this song that I've heard. Each one has something about it that moves me. This version...it's the COMPLETE package...Flo's leads (this song just fits her voice beautifully)...along with the wonderful hamronies in the background of the fellas with Marilyn's high notes (almost gospel like)...this song is a groove.

  73. R.... O....

this is incredible, i never heard this before

  74. c.... ....

This song was never released as a single for airplay.

  75. M.... ....

@nurse4u1 But it was a B side not an A side. So not marketed.

  76. n.... ....

    @MsTexas73
Hello. I'm now 54 and I can tell you that this was released as a single because I purchased it in the 1970's. It had a silver label. GREAT song!

  77. c.... ....

Jean Carne has her own soulful syle but Marilyn and Florence have a more pop/jazz style/sound. It's like comparing apples to oranges. They are both good versions.

  78. E.... B....

One of their best songs that most have never heard!!! Great song, great harmony, great arrangement......Thank you 5th Dimension!!

  79. d.... ....

Music is just not made like this anymore!!!!Beautiful Woman and voice.Thank you for sharing this!!!!

  80. s.... ....

@Noodleydoo Well.... 'I'm' with YOU here as well.... I MUCH loved and preferred their intricate vocal blendings especially!.....THIS GROUP IS PHENOMENAL!!!!!

  81. M.... ....

I still think it wa a mistake not releasing this as a single. It has the perfect formula for a hit. Great lyrics...great melody...wonderful lead vocals...and awesome background vocals. There's not one part of this song that is amiss. It should have been released as an A side.

  82. s.... ....

@JazzWithoutANet ....Of COURSE, she is Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!! Had the chance to be onstage with her and socialize a bit at the Vocal Group Hall of Fame concerts! That woman is AWESOME and can 'SING'!!!!!!! Such charisma too! Outstanding!

  83. s.... ....

@centralparocker .......Actually, I really think that it's Florence's Voice that GIVES the 5th Dimension its 'Sound' really! I Know all of the other voices play a part, but Florence's 'flavor' is what DOES it and the glue to it overall. Hers and Marilyn's Voice blend soooooo much it's like they are ONE, but they are different!!!!! The chemistry works soo well. And I Love everything that they do!

  84. N.... ....

@musiclover59 I'm with you. I was feeling nostalgic yesterday and listened to the "Aquarius" album in my car and was dumb-founded at how great the vocals were--I had forgotten. All five voices were completely different, but meshed perfectly. Listen closely to "Don't 'cha Hear Me Calling to Ya" and you will grasp how great this group was, vocally. After 1971 they started to abandon that group sound, going more for solos, but I much preferred the complicated harmonies and shared leads.

  85. c.... ....

@JazzWithoutANet That girl was so fine! I had a crush on her back then when I was 6 yrs. old.

  86. m.... ....

I played this song more than any other track from the "Portrait" album when it came out. It's still one of my all time favorites

  87. J.... ....

I am still helplessly in love with Florence LaRue....(sigh)

  88. M.... ....

I think she was her sister-in-law

  89. d.... ....

OMG what a great voice!!! I just have to love this song.

  90. M.... ....

Check out the version by Norman Connors...sung by Eleanor Mills. It's nice too.

  91. M.... ....

I still think they should have released it.

  92. M.... ....

    Thank you.

OK...I can get with OLB2A, Puppet Man, and even Save the COuntry as singles...BUT as much as I like the Medley...I think they should have released THIS song as a single...and Feelin' Alright.

  93. M.... ....

Can someone tell me which songs form this album were released as singles?

  94. B.... ....

This is a very difficult Webb song to sing--and Florence makes it her own.

  95. C.... C....

Love this, reminds me of my Senior year in High School...in Chicago. Very timely, and still beautiful. Thanks for posting.

  96. M.... ....

BLKaudioman...yes I love NC's version with Eleanor Mills singing it. And now having heard this verison I can say that I truly enjoy listening to this one too. Florence does a fantastic job with it.

NOTE: Marilyn is so distinctive...even in the backgorund...you can just hear her so clearly.

    I love this group.

  97. C.... C....

Thelma is a fantastic, from the gut singer along the lines of Gladys Knight and I love her. Her new album is a pure gem

  98. c.... ....

Florence had an amazing voice, too.........Marilyn and Florence complemented each other so well.......what talent!

  99. s.... ....

Musiclover59 I too felt that way until my cuz Gail hipped me to this version. I love them both really equally because as you said about Billy's piano it is breataking & his vocals came @ you from a man's point of view. I just wish someone would post Billy's version of THIS IS YOUR LIFE.Back in '72 when Billy released his version I really could identify with it because I had a relationship that crashed & burned & I would tell her to listen to the words closely. No matter what a great song!!!!!

  100. C.... C....

There is also the first version by Thelma Houston on her "Sunshower" album and Florence sort of follows the same melodic line
