5th Dimension, The - Go Where You Wanna Go Lyrics

You gotta go where you wanna go
Do what you wanna do
With whomever you wanna do it with

Baby, you gotta go where you wanna go
Do what you wanna do
With whomever you wanna do it with

You don't understand
That a girl like me can love just one man
Three thousand miles, that's how far you'll go
And you said to me, "Please, don't follow"

You gotta go where you wanna go
Do what you wanna do
With whomever you wanna do it with

You gotta go where you wanna go
Do what you wanna do
With whomever you wanna do it with

You don't understand
That a girl like me can love just one man
You've been gone a week and I tried so hard
Not to be the cryin' kind, not to be the girl you left behind

You gotta go where you wanna go
Do what you wanna do
With whomever you wanna do it with

5th Dimension, The Go Where You Wanna Go Comments
  1. S.... S....

Both versions sound great mamas papas and fifth dimension

  2. r.... 1....

WOW what a perfect cover song for the 5th Dimension with their amazing vocal harmonies !! It really is as good as the Mama's and the Papa's

  3. Q.... U....

Much better than the mama's and Pappas version

  4. r.... ....

Marilyn was one of my first crushes. Ronnie Spector was another...

  5. M.... A....

they corrected the grammar to 'whomever'  tee hee!

  6. E.... B....

    the young mod's forgotten story.

  7. M.... M....

Hey! there Georgy girl! That sound was being copied by many groups.Video tape the same year Martin Luther king got shot.

  8. R.... B....

Let's see, 1967...I bought this record!

  9. R.... B....

I was 17 years old and going into the army when this song came out! I bought the record too!

  10. J.... I....

Great Group beautiful girls there best song 60s the best

  11. R.... B....

I bought this record in 1967!

  12. I.... S....

Casey Kasem and they're singing a Mama and the Papa's song.

  13. m.... m....

    BLACK GROUP WHITE SOUND

  14. T.... ....

    Casey Kasem...lamest of the lame.

  15. R.... H....

I was born in 1967. Awesome music.

  16. B.... ;....

Yes the group was great and the girls beautiful!   A little tidbit the viewers may not have known;  Lamonte McLemore (far right) was an original member, but could have easily chosen professional baseball as a living.   He was that good.  I guess either way he couldn't lose.   He's still alive and pushing 80 years old!

  17. M.... L....

I was a teenager in this era and had a crush on Marilyn. What a groovy song then and now!

  18. S.... U....

    Times long gone

  19. A.... M....

If you got the money you can go where you wanna go...

    A.... M....

...and do what you wanna do....

  20. N.... B....

    JUST WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. W.... O....

One of the great songs written by the Mamas and the Papas' John Phillips. Fine performance by the Fifth Dimension.

  22. L.... ....

Are they using the same music in the background?

  23. J.... Z....

Anyone know what show this was?

  24. C.... M....

    Timer in the way.

  25. o.... ....

They were so great! BTW, the series 'It Takes a Thief', had an episode that included the group, with special emphasis on Marilyn McCoo. It was originally on ABC circa 1967.

  26. F.... J....

They need to make a movie about the lives of these great bands

  27. A.... B....

    "Aren't they great?" Yes!

  28. b.... ....

I remember them doing this song on the old Joey Bishop late night talk show (the one where he fired his announcer/co-host, Regis Philbin live, on-air one night), in the late 1960's. Was always one of my favorite Fifth Dimension songs!

  29. F.... J....

Love those groovy outfits. And it's nice to see a young(ish) Casey Kasem again.

  30. L.... L....

Music and love transcends all cultures. I remember in high school (showing my age!) seeing their album cover on our stereo. Their sweet, positive spirit and smiles brought encouragement to me--at a period (70s and 60's) when we didn't always hear a lot of positive music and messages (or even smiles!)

  31. c.... b....

I always thought The Mamas and Papas sang this song.

    c.... b....

They did, and briefly released it as a single in 1965. This a cover version from '67.

    c.... b....

they did, it flopped, but the 5th Dimension had a hit with it

  32. D.... P....

I didn't think I would live long enough to see anyone that is a worse dancer. Thanks folks.

    D.... P....

Yeah because dancing is what got them famous.

  33. D.... M....

    Casey Casem-MC?

  34. y.... ....

dang what happened to black women.

    y.... ....

Joe Dady - Dang what happened to white women.

  35. i.... w....

I had no idea it was the fifth dimension who did this song. they sounded so much like the mamas and papas to me.

    i.... w....

both groups had a hit with the same song.

  36. h.... ....

If I'm hearing the story correctly, The Mama's and Papa's version was released but pulled back from radio after their version of California Dreaming made more noise.
Subsequently, The 5th Dimension covered it. I'm guessing that Johnny Rivers waz aware of the song's hit potential. He knew there would be no competition from the other version, thus assuring the success of the 5th Dimension version.

So many songs had been recorded by African American groups and then usurped by Caucasian artists in the past.

This way thd public wins by getting two fantastic groups since this is the song that initially helpex the 5th burst onto the music scene!

    h.... ....

records aren't "pulled back" … they flop

  37. d.... q....

    Love them

  38. J.... C....

Like this version with the key change near the end. Makes the other seem dull by comparison.

  39. B.... ....

they seem to have a hard time standing on one leg, the singing is great and that what matters here .

    B.... ....

Hey Bosco, believe it or not, I noticed that too, I just wasn't feeling it at all when they were doing the one leg thing, but I still love the group though :-)

  40. b.... m....

Back when black women had class and dignity.

    b.... m....

bob meoff - You mean black women today have no class or dignity? You might find a black man who will disagreed with you and kick your ass in the process!

  41. D.... ....

    Awesome!

  42. H.... ....

You should have been there when they were putting out all these wonderful songs. It was a great time to be alive. We all had so much more fun than the kids today.

  43. L.... E....

    very good performance

  44. M.... P....

This was one of my fave trax back in the day. Very seductive, when you think about it. The whole "free love" groove back then is summed up in this song. "Go where you wanna go, do what you wanna do with whoever you wanna do it with." In other words, f**k whom you want when you want--no attachments, no fidelity, no marriage. If there are issue (i.e., kids), they can abide. If they have hangups over it, that's their problem.

I still like the music. Heck, I even like the lyrics. When I meditate on the meaning of it all, it grieves me to know that it bespeaks an attitude and a "lifestyle" that grieve the Holy Spirit. But the power of the music can't be denied. "FreeBird" and "Gentle on my Mind" are two other songs that speak to this ethic. The carnage that that whole era has left behind still haunts the world, and no doubt will for generations to come.

  45. M.... ....

This version sounds almost identical to the Mamas and Papas version - however The 5th Dimension rendition here is better!

  46. S.... W....

Well, I like the band, of course. It sounds almost like the Wrecking Crew, and obviously the singers are miming

    S.... W....

the wrecking crew backed all the 5th D songs.

  47. D.... B....

Was that Casey Kasem as emcee???

  48. p.... ....

Marilyn could have had me, but she went with some Billy dude...I'm still available, Marilyn!

  49. P.... H....

I bet the Mamas and Papas were impressed with this cover! Very well done cover, with a slight change in the rhythm and sped up just a bit from the M&P's version

  50. r.... r....

    That song was FANTASTIC!!!

  51. F.... J....

Their version sounds so similar to the Mamas and the Papas version.

  52. L.... N....

How much does this show look like a rip-off of American Bandstand? But gotta love the 5th Dimension. I got to see them in concert in Atlantic City in 1989. They were great.

  53. c.... 8....

Some of the best harmonies ever....!!!!

  54. C.... K....

I have this song on my iPod; I have a lot of 5th Dimension songs on my iPod

  55. c.... ....

What a classy and talented singing group! :)

    c.... ....

    And groovy, too.

  56. f.... ....

I'll NEVER See Color! I See The First Royal Family of Man! Down With Michelle! Out!

  57. f.... a....

we saw their first peformance 1966/1967 me and my brother we were adults he was 22 or 23 and i was 27 or 28 and he pointed out the girl with brown hair and said she was beyond pretty and that was Marylin mccoo but I didnt listen to Aquarius or Stoned soul picnic until now because i was working and i only know this song specifically

  58. J.... S....

Are you sure you don't mean "Shindig!", which was quite a famous musical TV program?

    J.... S....

I see I'm mistaken. Shindig was more well-known, but it was on back when TV was black and white. Casey Kasem was the host of the later program Shebang.

    J.... S....

Casey also hosted the network radio show American Top-Forty for many years. Shebang more or less was competing with American Bandstand and Dick Clark.

  59. J.... Z....

This is the first time I've hear this version and I have to say I really like how they corrected the grammar of the original. They changed "with whoever you.." into "with whomever you...", which is the proper grammatical version.

    J.... Z....

Yeash Josh don't be such a Grammar Nazi both are good underappreciated songs

    J.... Z....

    coolsweetgroovy

    J.... Z....

    coolsweetgroovy

    J.... Z....

I agree. Thank you for noticing that.

  60. c.... r....

    FLORENCE AND MARILYN-LAWD HAVE MERCY!!!!!!!!

    c.... r....

I'm a woman and I still say the same thing. They don't make ladies like this anymore now adays

    c.... r....

And those short dresses/skirts along with the go-go boots don't hurt anything. :)

    c.... r....

Hey coolSweetgroovy; I'm Hispanic male and I found these girls in law school of all places. Woof! What great dancers and kissers! And; as you say Ladies!!!

    c.... r....

    charles randolph l know.😍

  61. b.... t....

    The dancing, beautiful

  62. T.... P....

Thanks for posting! I had no idea the 5th Dimension sang this song.

  63. R.... B....

    GREAT!!! 1967!!!!

  64. t.... ....

When I first heard this song, I refused to believe the artists were black until I saw this video.

    t.... ....

+thebeatnumber Well, that's a fairly racist comment... especially if you're implying that Black people have to "sound" a certain way.

    t.... ....

Well, I didn't mean it in a racist way. I was simply observing that their sound is very different from what you'd expect from a black vocal group of that era.

    t.... ....

Do you not see how generalized and offensive your comments continue to be? How can hundreds of artists "all" sound the same, simply because they are Black? We are NOT a homogeneous, monolithic group, so it's Impossible for all of us to "sound" the same. Do all White artists from any given period sound the same? You're obviously Not Black/African American, or you would have better insight regarding your statements. Other than that, maybe you should try to socialize with some Black people and note the Individuality that is as prevalent as it is with Whites. SMDH.......

    t.... ....

I'm sure what thebeatnumber meant was that the song did not have the Motown/Tamla characteristics of its time. I didn't see any racism.

    t.... ....

thebeatnumber - That is how a lot of people felt in the 1950's when they heard the Platters! Everyone thought that they were white until you saw them!

  65. I.... ....

No male/female group has had as many top 40 songs as the 5th dimension.

  66. I.... ....

    They were great.

  67. J.... W....

Great closeups of gorgeous Marilyn. Flo was sexy as hell too. RIP Ron and the one and only Kasey Kasam. Miss you guys.

    J.... W....

Both Marilyn McCoo and Florence LaRue were beauty contest winners before becoming part of The 5th Dimension.

    J.... W....

I hope I don't sound too shallow for saying this, but I'll ALWAYS have mad respect for the voice over work Mr. Kasem did for the original Transformers cartoon. I can't mention this without giving a salute to Scatman Crothers as well. Us 80's kids will NEVER forget :)

  68. R.... P....

Good version, lacks the dynamic multi tone key change counter harmonies of moms and pops. This is a great song and this cover shows how great this song is.

  69. R.... 7....

Great song, so much better than the original by the Mamas and the Papas

  70. R.... G....

Fifth Dimension version is much better than the Mamas and Papas!

    R.... G....

Robin Greene The original is much better

  71. h.... ....

Great video.  Love the performance of this recording.

  72. B.... A....

Good cover of The Mamas & The Papas. :)

  73. B.... V....

    dynamic quintet

  74. i.... ....

At 1:29, Marilyn Mccoo looks like beyonce

    i.... ....

I get! I get it guys!  No comparison to Bey!
    Ha! Ha! lol

    i.... ....

+ivydude13 lmao sorry ivydude but us Marilyn fans are weird (in a good way of course) like that. Things one does NOT do...You don't spit into the wind, You don't mess with a junkyard dog, You don't mess with Bad Bad Leroy Brown and you definitely don't ever ever dare compare Beyonce to Marilyn. lol Beyonce is a beautiful young woman though. No doubt.

    i.... ....

@Jorge Washington  Not as bad as Beyonce fans, at least we don't look at her like a goddess and if it weren't for Marilyn McCoo, none of the great African-American pop singers of the 80's, 90's and 2000's would have existed.

    i.... ....

+Fuck all Weeaboos, fanboys/fangirls and other retards! I agree.

    i.... ....

@Jorge Washington  Beyonce has the worst fans, of any pop singer, period, well, besides Adele and Britney Spears.

  75. O.... R....

    I love this song, and I'm 18.

    O.... R....

+Daniel Sinkler You actually have good taste.

    O.... R....

You young man.. knows what real musc is . Welcome aboard. Great taste!

  76. H.... H....

    Amazing group...

  77. G.... D....

    Florence .... Gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    G.... D....

thats a damn understatement and you know it

    G.... D....

    @ur mom DITTO!!!!

  78. b.... ....

I did not know they sung this

  79. u.... ....

For once a black group covers a white group. They used the exact same arrangement John Phillips put together for the Mamas and the Poppas.

    u.... ....

+unclebobunclebob I thought I was the only one who noticed how weird is to hear a black band covering a white band. Most of the times is
    the opposite

    u.... ....

+unclebobunclebob The two groups were actually "friends", and used to sit in on each others' recording sessions.

    u.... ....

MrPman474 yeah I think back then it was like that. The stones used to sit in on Beatles recodings. The media likes to create these rivalries. Still goes on now

  80. s.... l....

Marilyn Mccoo she's gorgeous and she has one of the greatest pop and rick voices in history

    s.... l....

+steve lehrman She is beyond beautiful!

    s.... l....

    +ivydude13 She"s a stone cold fox

    s.... l....

    +Donald Mandel agree 100%

  81. R.... M....

Marilyn McCoo, Florence LaRue, Lamonte McLemore, Ron Towson and Billy Davis, Jr., on a Neil Sedaka-Howard Greenfield tune that didn't make on an LP until "The Age of Aquarius" in '69.  One GM I knew didn't want them played, once he found out they were black.  It took a lot of calls from listeners to change his mind, once I stopped playing their stuff and directed inquiries to his office.

    R.... M....

@RJ McAllister Big oops. Got my tracks messed up; this getting old is getting old. Correct on the John Phillips song that appeared on the 'Up, Up and Away' disc in 1966. Had it confused with "Working On a Groovy Thing'.

    R.... M....

    Wow, good for you, bro!

  82. M.... L....

Great video - thanks for posting this classic.

  83. C.... ....

I'm sorry, but as much as I hate to say it, 5 part harmonizing like this doesn't exist anymore, tight vocal arrangements, on key w/no auto-tune.........

    C.... ....

    So very true!!

    C.... ....

Indeed.. This was a lip-synch, but when they did songs live, their vocals were even better...

    C.... ....

A nice rendition but really not much more added to this than what John Phillips put into the composition... in the first place.

    C.... ....

Bilbo - except they used "whomever" instead of "whoever" (they corrected John's grammar) :)

    C.... ....

5 part harmonizing cannot exist today as each group member today would have their own manager, lawyer and agent looking out for their individual client's interests....not the group interests. Group solidarity is a thing of the past. Today people's egos and self-interest are too damn big to be team players in a singing group.

  84. R.... P....

Mamas and Papas version has smoother rhythm. Both are good, but the Mamas and Papas were the perfect fit for this gong.

    R.... P....

the tempo on the original was better this song is far too fast, also while this is good, if you cant improve upon a song why bother, take a tip from joe cocker.

  85. s.... ....

On this day in 1967 {February 18th} the Fifth Dimension performed "Go Where You Wanna Go" on the ABC-TV program 'American Bandstand'...
At the time the song was at #21 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; and the very next day it would peak at #16 {for 2 weeks} and spent 10 weeks on the Top 100...
It reached #9 on the Canadian RPM Singles chart...
Between 1967 and 1976 the quintet had thirty Top 100 records; seven made the Top 10 with two reaching #1, "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" for 6 weeks in 1969 and "Wedding Bells Blues" for 3 weeks also in 1969...
They just missed having a third #1 when "One Less Bell to Answer" peaked at #2 for two weeks in 1970 {the two weeks it was at #2, "My Sweet Lord" by George Harrison was the #1 record for both those weeks}...
Sadly, original member Ron Townson passed away on August 2nd, 2001 at the age of 68...
    May he R.I.P.

  86. P.... P....

    Florence LaRue!

  87. T.... F....

... with WHOMever you wanna do it with.  :)

    T.... F....

    . . . 60s, man!!!  ♥

  88. j.... ....

Gotta say, everybody goes on about Marilyn and rightly so, but Flo was cute as a button.  I'm also diggin' the choreography.

    j.... ....

+jethro1963 -- both were "Miss Bronze California" back in the day.

    j.... ....

jethro1963 They are the black version of Ginger and Mary Ann from the old show Gilagans island. Marilyn is Ginger and Florence is Mary ANN.Both pretty and gorgeous in their own way.

  89. a.... s....

I remember this song so well, when it came out.   I listened to this, while watching the video, and I couldn't sit still.  The song just makes you wanna MOVE & GROOVE !!!

  90. M.... P....

    Absolutely spectacular amazing !

  91. D.... R....

When will Apple come up with an iTime Machine?

  92. j.... ....

The power that Marilyn and Florence had vocally is evident here. There is no way Michelle Phillips could've competed with that.

    j.... ....

@joelsbebop I was thinking just the opposite Cass and Michelle were better -then I saw your comment -so to each their own

    j.... ....

Michelle Phillips did alright for herself.

    j.... ....

The two versions are very similar. Not sure who recorded it first

  93. .... ....

    この曲は最近知ったがお気に入りになりました(^∇^)あと、声ですぐわかりましたがCasey Kasemが曲紹介してたんですね。

  94. m.... h....

    Casey Kasem, at the beginning.

  95. W.... ....

This was THE 1st time I saw Marilyn ----OMG, what a total-babe !!! and yes, this version was so much better than The Mama's & Papa's version!      Wolfsky9, 68 y/o

    W.... ....

The funny thing is the same backing band (The Wrecking Crew) played on both versions.

    W.... ....

+GenesisFan01 And both versions are identical

  96. 2.... ....

I love both versions. I remember the first time I heard the  5th Demension's version  I thought they were a White group also. (lol)

  97. t.... ....

I love both versions of this great tune. And yes, McCoo is a hottie!

    t.... ....

Indeed & LOL!,She later hosted Solid Gold.

  98. F.... B....

RIP band member Ron Townsend(1933-2001), John Phillips(1935-2001) and Dick Clark(1928-2012)

    F.... B....

Don't forget Mama Cass RIP and Denny Doherty RIP. Michelle's the only one left.

    F.... B....

    @John James Them too

    F.... B....

I've seen Ron's last name spelled two different ways in numerous places. I don't understand what the discrepancy is.

  99. F.... B....

Almost as good as the Mamas and the Papas verison.

    F.... B....

Well LOL & yes indeed,it has!,Mamas & Papas did it 1st,Then the 5th Dimension did a cover of it.

    F.... B....

Good but mama's and papas are a whole higher level
