10cc - Fresh Air For My Mama Lyrics

So say one and so say all
Say what you gotta say
Or don't say nothing at all
You been tossin' and turnin' through soft sticky nights
While the Bronx below you fights to stay alive

So say one and so say all
Be what you gotta be
Or don't be nothing at all

Be gracious to your mother
When you leave this neighbourhood
The change is going to do her good
Next to me you look bad
'Cos there ain't no fresh air for my momma, my momma

But the drop is shear
When you break away

Take me away
It's just about time to hit the road
And say
You gotta believe in something
It's easy to see
My God is fading away
So pick up your bible and pray for me

We're all alone in the darkness
But our eyes are wide open
We don't see nothing
And our hands are tied
To the railings of the Bowery
And the humid city slickers

So say one and so say all
We had a lot to say
And we said it all

The cost of living in dreams
Is rising like a crime wave
The American way of dying

And it gets you every time
And it looks like it's got to my momma
My momma
May she rest in peace

10cc Fresh Air For My Mama Comments

I bought this album when it came out. I was 14. I'd heard a few singles and liked them, but when I heard this song I was emotionally shaken. It still makes me cry. It is superb. It's amazing how a group of lads from Manchester in England managed to convey an American experience so well. Try listening to The Ghetto by Mark-Almond (not Marc Almond), a British band from the early 70s. They did a similarly good job. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuS_cqaXZ7M

Lot of people just miss the point about this band. They are not copying bands like the Beach boy they are doing a parody of them and other influences while at the same time building on a base with their irony and musical ideas. At the same time they respect these bands but they are pretty playful Pop shouldn't be that serious.

Sad that most people will never hear this in their life. I wish they could. Might make the world a little better.

  5. M.... L....

    every mom should hear this

Reminds me a lot of The Band. Kevin Godley looked and sounded like Richard Manuel of The Band. He's a very underrated soul singer IMO.

Pure genius! My all time favourite band!! 💖

That lead vocal really reminds me of Freddy Mercury in places.

+hklinker Yes, especially when he says Mama!

I get Freddie 'n' Billy Joel.

You can like what you want. But I think you're a little overboard on your praise. I'll admit, this song sounds a bit more accomplished than the others on this album. I can hear the Beach Boys influence. And a little bit of Hall and Oates.

For me it´s not about pointless comparisons; both Townsend/The Who and 10cc are rated on there individual contribution to our musical landscape and culture, 10cc have left the world a legacy few can equal for sheer diversity and musical integrity - and they done it all with a liberal sprinkling of tongue in cheek British humour! Musical Genius.

  11. F.... G....

Seriously? No, Townshend is genius. Not this.

  12. F.... G....

    You're high.

  13. F.... T....

What an excellent video and a brilliant song.
We so miss the original 10cc.
Four great musicians, composers and innovators.
    A classic combination of genius!
