10000 Maniacs - Eden Lyrics
We are the roses in the garden, beauty with thorns among our leaves.
To pick a rose you ask your hands to bleed.
What is the reason for having roses when your blood is shed carelessly?
It must be for something more than vanity.
We're not as close as we could be.
Willing to grow but rains are shallow.
Barren and wind-scattered seed on stone and dry land, we will be.
Waiting for the light arisen to flood inside the prison.
And in that time kind words alone will teach us, no bitterness will reach us.
Reason will be guided in another way.
All in time, but the clock is another demon that devours our time in Eden, in our Paradise.
Will our eyes see well beneath us, flowers all divine?
Is there still time?

10000 Maniacs Eden Comments
Still my dream girl.2020
We were all so smart in the 90's because we listened to Natalie Merchant
We are the roses in the garden, beauty with thorns among our leaves
To pick a rose you ask your hands to bleed
What is the reason for having roses when your blood is shed carelessly?
It must be for something more than vanity
Believe me, the truth is we're not honest, not the people that we dream
We're not as close as we could be
Willing to grow but rains are shallow
Barren and wind-scattered seed on stone and dry land, we will be
Waiting for the light arisen to flood inside the prison
And in that time kind words alone will teach us, no bitterness will reach us
Reason will be guided another way
All in time, but the clock is another demon that devours our time in Eden, in our Paradise
Will our eyes see well beneath us, flowers all divine?
Is there still time?
If we wake and discover in life a precious love, will that waking become more heavenly?
It would be helpful if you could add the lyrics in the description.
Awaken, be true and honest...make changes, seize the moment and blossom. Be authentic with each other. It's never too late to see the world through different eyes...time is precious so seize the day.
I swear I can’t stop listening to this song! Sublime
This is life in New England. Paradise
I will go to my grave knowing that Lucinda Williams, Aimee Mann and Natalie are the 3 greatest women songwriters in my life

THE most sublime songwriting and Natalie delivers it exquisitely. Eden, is a majestic album.
I thought alot about the garden of Rose's and time today!
Thanks for showing the lyrics
Since I first bought this album in 1992, that line ''But the clock is another demon, that devours our time in Eden, in our paradise'', has entered my head more times than I care to remember, usually on the way home after a particularly enjoyable day, in a beautiful place when the time has just flown by, and reality (and all the shit that comes with it) calls once again! Wonderful songwriting, beautifully delivered.
Fantastic comment; feel the same way about Eden. Such poetic lyrics.
Spot on! Peace.
She is a gem; Ive had this album since it came out. I don't play it very much such that when I play it, it hits me in the heart and head.
Portcullis yes! This is my favorite song of theirs and that is the most phenomenal lyric.
