On this day in 1985 {August 31st} 'Til Tuesday performed "Looking Over My Shoulder" on the syndicated television program 'Solid Gold'...
At the time the song was at #66 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, the following week it would peak at #61 {for 1 week} and it spent 5 weeks on the Top 100...
And on the day of their 'Solid Gold' appearance their "Voices Carry" was still on the Top 100 at position #73, a little under eight weeks earlier it had peaked at #8 {for 1 week}...
Besides "Looking Over My Shoulder" and "Voices Carry", the Boston-based quartet had three other Top 100 records, ""What About Love" {#26 in 1986}, "Coming Up Close" {#59 in 1987}, and "(Believed You Were) Lucky" {#95 in 1988}...

Wow this mix is totally different from the album.

Uhh, no, I have had this album since it was originally released, it's the same song just re-cut for the video but not changed.

@Donald Scott I agree with @CTJacob here, the mix is quite different from the "Expanded Edition" that's here on YouTube -- however I have the vinyl as well and that mix is actually closer to the "Expanded Edition" just a little less squashed (which happens in mastering). It's not unheard of for single or video mixes to be different for one reason or another, or even different pressings of the same releases have slightly different mixes.

I never liked the commercial icons of the 80s. Madonna, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Phil Collins, Huey Lewis & the News, Pet Shop Boys, Culture Club or Poison. I always fascinated the distinctive and transcendental sound of college rock (R.E.M., The Replacements, Dream Syndicate, Dead Kennedys, The Cure, PIL, Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark, Skinny Puppy and Einstürzende Neubauten)
I do not agree with who says that 'Til Tuesday is the best band of 80's but it also seems unfair to compare them with the alternative rock of the 80's. I love those alternative rock bands but in my collection I have the last album of 'Til Tuesday. The best of them and the least commercial. It's a great album and I like it the same way I like Pixies. They avoided repeating the sonic landscape exposed on their first and most successful album. I think 'Til Tuesday artistically surpasses Madonna or Michael Jackson and perhaps if Til Tuesday had been signed by an independent label they would have had better chances. Proof of it is that its singer and bassist Aimee Mann with that beautiful voice and enigmatic beauty continues to make great independent albums away from the mainstream

One of the couple of 80s shows on VH1 stated that "Voices Carry" was the only song Till Tuesday ever made, then she vanished. Of course VH1 also said that Max Headroom came out in 1987, so I guess they don't really care about research and the Till Tuesday statement was also not accurate.

Why wasn't this as big as Voices Carry? A brilliant song and band.

It was a very successful single in Japan as I recall, but no, in the USA it topped out at something like 65th on billboard.

my guess is that in the 80's people were kinda spoiled with good music... :-D
from todays point of view of course it's very unusual and of course is and always was really quality music!!

I saw them first at a fraternity party in Boston. They played the first album, which hadn't dropped yet. I knew many other Boston area musicians at the time. I would often see Aimee around town always running late guitar in hand for something. I am not here to rate them against the decade, but I love Aimee with or without Til Tuesday.

I would love it if they did.  Michael still works with Aimee as a producer and musician.  I think Robert is doing session work these days.  Last I heard Joey is a sculptor or something.

At this same show we were front row, right under the stage, which was cool.  I had to protect my spot, though, because next to me were four or five girls who kept squealing that they wanted to see Michael.  They kept trying to squeeze me out of my place so they could be closer to him.  Only once the show got going they were all swooning over Joey...and calling him Michael.  Needless to say I didn't give up my floor space to them.

Not an impossible dream then. Sounds like you had a fun timer apart from the groupies - they are always at concerts and gigs and get right up my nose. As a journalist though I used to tell them to move lol. I keep telling myself I should think about writing to Aimee too. I might even be her height by then.

Farrenheit, Jon Butcher, Private Lightning all more talented. Til Tuesday was just a pretty face, a pretty voice, and lots of synths.

Not to be snarky...but Boston used to be a cool city. The Cars, Til Tuesday, Aerosmith, Fugazi, etc.. now it's a sanitary sports obsessed piece of clean shit.

club after hours. Look up a CD called Mass Ave. It's on Amazon.

.. When the only thing on the radio was disco or old bands that had nothing new, the music scene in Boston was GREAT! All those old band names that were so popular are gone, but it sure was a life saver then. Even The Rat and Pizza Pad are gone.

+Blaire Ronzel This city is great. All cities go through phases. We won 6 championships in the last fifteen years, so one would expect increased interest in sports. The problem is the industry itself, they don't economically reward talented musicians anymore.

There are a lot of musicians in this city as Aimee Mann herself went Berkeley briefly. A lot of avenues for up and coming acts.

I don't expect the industry to get better. Most independent music stores can't make it anymore and children are picking up instruments less and less. The Google generation is becoming very diluted from endless technologies.

I grew up in New England and have seen Boston turn from what was a vibrant music town to a santized sports obsessed sterile city. Check out the Boston Common...it was once a wonderful array of music stores. Most are gone. Aimee Mann was big when I was in high school with Til Tuesday...she's now in Los Angeles. The music scene has been petering out since the greedhead developers decided to change it into a yuppie den. It's very sad because I remember the 80s and how vibrant Boston was. Providence has flickers of what that was like. 

Blaire Ronzel Fugazi are from DC, but yes, Boston was amazing. Kind of a hipster haven these days. The city to watch these days is Providence, RI. Very tightly knit community of supportive and talented artists. Newport, RI too.

We have Big Brother now. Started to build in late 80's in earnest. Thankfully I enjoyed English Beat early and mid 1980's and other aspects before Just Say No.
